Keeping Your Bees Stress-Free

Discover > Beekeeping  > Keeping Your Bees Stress-Free

Bees by nature are diligent workers. They do not need constant monitoring. They do the work nature has intended for them no matter the situation they are in. As beekeepers, man manage the environment the bees lived and worked in to be able to benefit and take a share from the products the bees worked hard for. In this regard, beekeepers would want their bees to be in their best shape. Happy, healthy, and stress-free bees are the most productive ones.

Here below are some things you can do to make your bees in top shape:

Purchase Clean Hives and Equipment

Having a clean hive and equipment is vital to a healthy colony, whether you are just getting started or are an experienced beekeeper. If you want to buy used hives and equipment, ensure that the previous owner inspects and cleans his equipment for pests and illnesses on a regular basis.

Perform an actual thorough inspection of the hive and its components before making a purchase. Make sure they're clear of pests and diseases. Sanitize and disinfect them before you use them.

Clean Apiary Equipment Regularly

Clean hive tools, smokers, and other equipment that are stained with wax, honey, or propolis. Make it a habit to clean them after use in each hive to avoid transmission of possible infection.

The same goes for honey extractors, drums, and containers. Always clean them inside and out, dried and sealed after each use.

Dispose of Waste Material Effectively

Maintaining good hygiene practices will ensure a healthy colony. Make sure to always clean out honey spills, cover or destroy exposed combs and wax to prevent robbing. Remove beeswax scraps, old combs and dead-out colonies which can attract and harbor pests and diseases. Large debris, foreign objects, and obstacles from within the hive should also be removed.

Ensure Adequate Resources

Bees, like all living creatures, require continuous access to a clean and secure water supply. It is critical to keep them well hydrated, particularly during the warmer months. In close proximity to your hives, provide a secure place for them to land and get water, such as a shallow dish or bird bath.

When it comes to honey, avoid excessive harvesting. Leave your bees their stock to get them through winter. When there is a need, learn the pros and cons of feeding the bees and what best to feed them with to supplement them temporarily.

Let The Air Flow

During the warmer months, the temperature tends to heat up. It is important to let the air flow to prevent overheating and melting of honey. You can increase ventilation with the use of screened bottom boards, adding more ventilation holes, elevating the hive using a stand, and more.

Expand the Hive When Necessary

Overcrowding is among the factors that causes a hive to swarm. Swarming may be avoided by providing more room for the colony as it grows. You need to expand and provide more room when about 80% of the frames are filled up.

Inspect Regularly and Stay Alert

Perform regular hive inspections to monitor your bees health. Be on the guard for pests and diseases that may develop and act on it right away before it gets worse. Develop suitable pest and disease management methods and keep track of all treatment informat

Check on your queen as well every few weeks to make sure she’s laying eggs regularly. Do inspections with intentions and know what you need to check and look for before opening the hive. Be discreet and quick but gentle when handling them so as not to disturb them when unnecessary.

Provide Plenty Of Plants

If you can, it would be best to provide plenty of pollen and nectar sources for your bees. Plant different varieties of flowers and plants where they can happily forage from.

It would be best if they bloom at different times of the year to provide access to your bees all year round. Make sure to keep them as natural as possible and avoid using harmful chemicals.
