Summer Wine Destinations in the Brazos Valley Area

For me, one of the best destinations in Texas for a wine-fueled weekend getaway is Brazos Valley. I’ve been on a few trips to this wonderful region northwest of Houston, visiting famous locations like Washington-on-the-Brazo and the Queen Theater. But, of course, my trips have also featured plenty of wonderful wine spots.

So, I’m here to tell you about my favorite wineries and vineyards in the Brazos Valley Area. If you’re planning a trip with family or friends, these places are sure to be worthwhile additions to your itinerary.

Bernhardt Winery

Located in Plantersville, Houston Hill Country is Bernhardt Winery. This winery is situated in an accessible area and is home to a variety of wines, each telling their own story. Walking in, you’ll find a selection of chocolates and focaccia bread that you can purchase to go with their award-winning wines. If you get the chance to visit, you just have to try their Texas Conquistador, which boasts earthy flavors (What wine goes well with earthy flavors?) and hints of black olives. Upon sampling it, you’ll enjoy its musky notes of leather and smoky aftertaste.

Saddlehorn Winery

Just outside of Burton, Texas is the Saddlehorn Winery. From the outside, this wine spot instantly gives the impression of a barn. And this theme is continued on the inside, with exposed beams, wood textures, and cowhide furniture decorating the establishment. In the summer, lush green fields filled with bluebonnets surround Saddlehorn Winery, where you can see cows grazing away. You can enjoy their wines while either admiring the outdoor scenery or in the comfort of their many tasting rooms. Saddlehorn’s 2017 Tempranillo offers flavors of black cherry that culminate in a delightful nutmeg (how long does nutmeg last?) taste.

Pleasant Hill Winery

Pleasant Hill Winery showcases traditional winemaking methods while offering customers beautiful rural views. If you’re a keen wine drinker like me, then this is the place to sit back with a glass of red with family and friends. However, if you’re looking for a more interactive wine experience, then Pleasant Hill Winery also has you covered. They offer a wide variety of activities, allowing their visitors to pick grapes from their fields and stomp them, for example. Their 2018 Sangiovese marries together the famous flavors of Italian and Texan wines, producing a spiced fruit-jam flavor profile – a perfect wine pairing for an Italian meal.

Perrine Winery

Perrine Winery offers a modern industrial feel that goes well with its selection of wines. When I first visited this spot with my friends, I thought it felt a bit like a wine warehouse. This winery is great for intimate wine-tastings, where you can enjoy conversations with the staff about anything and everything “vino”. They also put on a variety of events throughout the month – on every third Saturday, they serve up a tremendous Texas barbecue, which goes perfectly with their semi-sweet Blueberry Blast.

Peach Creek Vineyards

Situated in the middle of the lush countryside in College Station is Peach Creek Vineyards. This vineyard prides itself on all its wines being made from 100% Texas-grown fruits. They have a large outdoor area where you can enjoy your wine surrounded by nature, and, if you’re a bit of an extrovert, it is a great place for meeting like-minded people who enjoy a good glass of wine. I had the pleasure of trying their Texas Two-Step, made from a mix of Lenoir and Blanc du Bois grapes to produce a semi-sweet blend. Earthy and spice-filled notes combined with a blend of fruity and chocolate flavors make this wine deliciously memorable on the palate.

Peach Creek Vineyards offers excellent service and top-notch wine to be enjoyed in their spectacular vineyard.
