Texas is full of fabulous destinations that all deserve a visit at least once. Thinking of going away for a long weekend? Then why not squeeze in a road trip and head to West Texas to disconnect from the day-to-day grind. With its beautiful national parks and array of historical sites, you’ll certainly enjoy exploring this region. And the countless food joints are sure to make the trip even better.
Here are a few of my favorite West Texas road trip spots, where you can enjoy plenty of sightseeing as well as much delicious Texas cuisine.
Terlingua
Let’s kick things off with the famous not-so-abandoned ghost town of Terlingua. Here, you’ll find some fascinating historical buildings that date back to the Wild West years of the Lone Star State. Visit the renowned Trading Post, which has been converted into a gift shop selling intriguing souvenirs and collectibles. Before you leave, make sure to pay a visit to the Starlight Theater Restaurant and Saloon. With its old Western saloon atmosphere, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time!

Chisos Mountains Lodge
After a long day at Terlingua, a great place to rest and grab some great grub for dinner is the Chisos Mountains Lodge. This lodging facility not only offers delicious dining options but also boasts sprawling views of Big Bend National Park. Offering overland tours of the park, you’ll have the chance to visit the Santa Elena loop, the Glenn Springs Road loop, the Ernst Tinaja, and the iconic Balanced Rock.
Big Bend National Park
If you’re up for some adventure on foot, then hiking across Big Bend National Park is something you just have to do. There are plenty of guided tours available to tourists, but it’s always fun to walk to and around the sights yourself, allowing you and your fellow hikers to take in the majesty of nature found in this famous park. After a long day of hiking, you can enjoy a spot of relaxation in the cool waters of the tallest canyon in the park, Santa Elena Canyon.
Alpine
After some good times and awesome views at Big Bend National Park, a great place to cap off your trip is the Holland Hotel in Alpine, Brewster County. Originally built in 1928, this hotel is rich in history, with the old-fashioned amenities offering visitors glimpses into the past. If you’re looking for a place to dine after your hike, head to the legendary Century Bar and Grill at the Hotel. My advice is to try one of their delicious entrees, such as their Super Smash Burger, before capping off the meal with pastries from Taste & See Bakery out on North 5th Street, Alpine.
When a long weekend is coming up, I love to plan a little road trip filled with adventures and food. West Texas is a brilliant region to explore if you only have a few days to spare, especially if you enjoy a hiking trail or two. So pack your bags, throw all your worries away for a little while, and hit the road!
