The Best Open Fire Grills

Open fire grills are straightforward, stylish, and the perfect way to cook a variety of dishes outdoors. There aren’t any tubes to fit or tanks to refill, just a fire and a grate to prepare some truly delicious food.

Nowadays, there’s an overwhelming range of open fire grills to choose from. So, in this article, I've boiled them down to some of my favorites, which also happen to be the most practical!

Budget Open Fire Grills

When searching for a low-cost grill, you’re most likely going to be looking at ones made from stainless steel or another steel alloy. To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with this. In many ways, grills made with this material are a lot better –– they’re lighter, more resistant to the elements, and of course, cheaper!

Budget Open Fire Grills

Stainless steel grills like this Branded Boards Bushcraft Grate are resistant to water and super lightweight. The latter is particularly handy when you’re out hiking and carrying it around for long periods of time. Bear in mind, though, that this grate doesn't have any legs. While that may seem like a disadvantage, it allows for much greater versatility!

If you’re looking for something a little more sturdy and, dare I say, a little more stylish, a black alloy steel grill like this Texsport Heavy Duty Camp Grill is the way to go. Costing less than $25, it’s a steal! Black alloy steel has many of the corrosion-related advantages of stainless steel, but with some added weight. It also features a pair of foldable legs, making it an adaptable piece of equipment no matter where you’re cooking.

Mid-range Open Fire Grills

Quality doesn’t have to mean premium prices. And when you’re looking for basic but top-notch functionality, griddles such as this Heavy RedCamp Cold Rolled Steel Grill will do just the trick. This particular grill has a pair of extendable legs, which comes in useful for someone with a dodgy back like me.

Mid-range Open Fire Grills

Possibly the best and most convenient open fire grills are the ones fitted with a stake you can simply push into the ground. These grills can be set up pretty much anywhere without too much fuss. A bit of kit like this can cost several hundred dollars –– but if that’s about to put you off, then wait a sec!

Texsport offers a Heavy Duty Swivel Grill at a fraction of the cost of some other suppliers. It’s great for kettles, pans, griddles, or (of course!) open fire cooking.

High-end Open Fire Grills

This is where the fun begins. If you’re willing to dole out some dollar on the best material and high-end craftsmanship, then look no further.

Whether you plan to grill, fry, or boil, this HzGamer Fire Pit Grill (strange brand to order outdoor gear from, right?) can do all three with ease. The only downside? They’re not nearly as conveniently portable as some of the other entries in this article.

High-end Open Fire Grills

The final grill on this list is the Bruntmor Swinging Campfire Cooking Stand. It features everything you could possibly want and need in an open fire grill. But be aware – it’s a big boy! Nevertheless, by taking it apart, it becomes easily portable. This grill is durable, easy to set up, and extremely versatile. And best of all, it gives you space that is usually lacking when cooking outdoors.

An open fire grill is a must-have for anyone who enjoys cooking en plein air. Whether it’s in your backyard, on a campsite, or in the bush, these grills will certainly come in handy when preparing some delicious dishes. However, make sure when lighting a fire in the wild to be aware of local fire bans and restrictions!
