6 Best Farmers Market Austin To Shop Locally

It’s incredibly important to have an accessible source of healthy food when you’re living in a city and can’t grow your own food. Citizens of Austin are lucky in this regard since they have quite a lot of farmers markets to choose from.

A lot of these markets have a set of standards as to what kind of vendors can work with the market. That gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with the market before buying there and to be sure that you’re getting the best produce out there.

1. Texas Farmers Market At Muller

Muller is one of the fastest growing areas of the city and that’s why it had a growing need for a modern and eco-friendly market. It also has a changing demographic with nicer homes being built and fancy restaurants popping up at every corner.

The new occupants also have modern outlooks on agriculture and dinning and that shows in the values that the market stands for and that it asks from its vendors to stand for. The vendors have a cycle on which they work so you may not find the person you’re looking for every time you go to the market. The selection is best on the weekends.

2. SFC Farmers Market

The Sustainable Food Center is more than just a place to shop for your produce. It’s an NGO that works on helping farmers and farmers’ market shopper move towards the eco-friendly approach to agriculture. This is done with a variety of policy ideas and programs that are public minded. The market is just a small portion of this vision.

The market itself started in 2003 while the organization exists since the early 90s. It works on Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM and since it’s downtown, parking can be a problem.

3. Hope Farmers Market (Business Closed)

Hope Farmers Market was founded as a way to bring together support the farmers’ community of East Austin since it’s this part of town that needed that kind of an organization and it didn’t have one.  It takes place at Plaza Saltillo and it’s open on Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm.

The market sells a wide range of products beyond just vegetables, meat and dairy produce. It also features local artisans, artists, and jewelry makers. It’s truly rooted in the community it is based in and that’s why it’s worth the support.

4. Lone Star Farmers Market

Even though it’s not technically located in Austin, this farmers market, makes it into our list since most of its visitors and shoppers are from the city. It’s located just 25 miles outside of Austin and many don’t mind the drive because of the quality of its produce.

There are more than 40 vendors offering their products on this market and there are more products than just food. It’s a center of the local community and there’s live music, yoga classes and local artists and artisans.

5. Boggy Creek Farm

Farmers markets are usually praised because they cut the middle man between the farmer and the shopper. You make a purchase from the farmer directly instead of going to the grocery shop. In this case you get even closer to the producer since this farmers market is located on the actual farm where the produce is made.

The farm is a homestead that’s been operation in one way or another since the 19th century. It’s open from Wednesday to Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm. Beyond the produce and the meat and dairy produce, the farm also sells items from the kitchen.

6. Green Gate Farms

Just nearby, there’s another farm you can visit and shop from directly. The farm is historic, but also certified as an organic farm, meaning that it has changed its way of work over time. They sell produce, eggs, free-range meat, flowers, and honey all of which are made on the farm itself.

It’s open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and on Tuesdays from 3 pm to 6 pm. On Sundays, there are farm tours for those who want to start their own farm and learn on the spot.

7. Barton Creek Farmers

Most of us have heard of Barton Creek mall, but the farmers market that’s just nearby isn’t that well known. It should be since it’s one of the best local farmers markets with great fresh produce and with farmers that do their work in an eco-friendly way.

It’s open every day from 9 am to 1 pm and it offers fresh produce, grass-fed meats, prepared foods, and artisanal goods. There’s also live music ranging from bluegrass to jazz. A few knife sharpening businesses also operate on the premises.  Even though it’s a smaller market it stands out with its quality.
