Texas farmers market has come up with exciting news about their staff and management. They have a new director on board and that’s Evan Driscoll. His new title will be executive director. This hasn’t come up as a consequence of any inside problems. It was simply a time for a change as the term of the previous director has ended.
The new director has a long term plan for the market that’s aimed at both innovation and keeping what’s the best about it so far.
What’s Texas Farmers Market?
Texas Farmer’s market is a local farmer’s market with a clear goal of bringing healthy and local food to its customers and clients. They work year round and they put extra emphasis on using seasonal produce so that the customers could benefit from healthy food that don’t require additional investment to be made in each of the seasons.
The actual selling part of their work happens on every Wednesday and Sunday, besides the Muller center. It’s set up as a non-profitable organization and that’s how it’s set up and that’s how it’s taxed as well.
Market Rules
The marker is separated from similar organizations in Texas because it has a rather strict set of guidelines and that are made to guide its work especially when it comes to keeping the produce healthy and produces in an eco-friendly way. The vendors using it need to follow these rules.
The produce needs to be made no more than 150 miles from Austin
The farmers need to practice a clearly set of eco-friendly policies which will be tested by the Farmer’s Market.
Meat producer need to have a pasture based rotational grazing system that protects both the animals and the soil.
The vendors need to pay taxes on time and in accordance to the law.
Who’s Evan Driscoll?
Evan Driscoll has worked in the food industry for the past 10 years. He has taken many roles in this industry and that’s what makes him qualified to take on the job of executive director of the market. His previous job was as director of operations in Foodshed Investors right here in Austin.
Before that he worked with Sustainable Food center farmers market as a farm manager. Before that he has also run his own small farm which means Driscoll is familiar with both small and large businesses in the industry.
Foodshed Investors
Driscoll most recent work with Foodshed Investors is probably most important in terms of how it will affect his new position as an executive director. Foodshed Investors is an investment hub that tries and often succeeds to be much more than that. It finds its place in the intersection of the environmental issues, farms and business opportunities.
Driscoll was director of operations which means that his work was focused on the business side of things. This is an interesting experience to bring to a non-profit organization such as Texas Farmers Market.
Driscoll’s Statement
Driscoll has issued a statement about his new position and his view of the great organization he’s taking over. It goes as follows:
I’m completely thrilled to be joining the Texas Farmers’ Market team as Executive Director. Farmers Markets are the backbone of a strong, thriving local food community and economy, and joining TFM’s professional staff of dedicated local food advocates, a community of vendors with top notch products, a cohort of farmers and ranchers with delicious, sustainable food – it is an absolute honor to serve as the new ED. I’m humbled by this opportunity.
Driscoll also stated that:
I understand, first hand, how vital it is for our local food community to have thriving Farmers’ Markets. I’m very excited to commence work as the new ED – learning from TFM’s vendors, staff, board, and the community at large, for how I can best support our mutual goals and aspirations. I want to extend a big thanks to TFM’s board and staff for this opportunity, and all the amazing work from TFM’s past Executive Director, Kate Payne. I’m fortunate to have a solid foundation to build from.
He will be taking his new position on August 18th.
