Having to deal with getting infected with COVID-19 and undergoing self-isolation has got me thinking of how I’m going to pursue a healthier diet. Coughing my lungs out isn’t fun and, with the free time I had, made me look into superfoods and how they can have a huge impact on my health.

As I delved into the superfoods that I can readily get my hands on after being quarantined, I noticed that I have to get superfoods that are in season. This ensures that I can get the freshest food items that I can integrate into my diet. With the hours I spent scouring the internet, I narrowed it down to 5 in-season superfoods that are sure to bump up the health value of my current diet.

Collard Greens

A southern favorite, Collard greens (how long do collard greens last?) is one of the superfoods that are currently in season in Texas. This is a great option to add to your planned superfood diet since it’s available for most of the year except for May through September. The benefits of collard greens are that it is packed with choline that helps in improving nerve impulses, lowers cholesterol levels in the body, and is a good source of Vitamin K to aid in calcium absorption.

A great addition to your planned diet, collard greens are versatile and readily available for most of the year in Texas.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes have a huge potential when it comes to integrating them into your diet. It can be consumed as a staple food, chips, and even cooked over an open fire. Available for most of the year, this root crop is pretty straightforward to grow and if you have some space in your backyard to spare, you can even grow it yourself. This superfood is packed with Vitamin A that keeps your eyesight healthy, antioxidants for the growth of good bacteria in the gut, and, for purple sweet potatoes, has anthocyanin that protects the brain from free-radical damage.

Broccoli

In-season January to May, this superfood is a staple produce in farmers markets early in the year and even up to December. This makes a fine addition to your superfood diet because of the potent combination of sodium, vitamin C, folate, and magnesium. The broccoli helps your body maintain balanced nutrient levels and is quite versatile when cooking dishes. My personal favorite is stir-fried broccoli, garlic, and beef that is lightly coated with oyster sauce.

Broccoli is a good addition to your planned super diet because of the sheer amount of vitamins and nutrients that it offers.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are also a great addition if you’re looking for a superfood that is in-season year-round. This fantastic fungi gives dishes a wonderful umami flavor that amplifies the flavors of meat dishes. Mushrooms have a special place in my heart since I’m really a sucker for dishes that include this superfood in the ingredient list. They are packed with a good variety of nutrients such as Vitamin C, potassium, folate, calcium, and phosphorous which makes the mushrooms one of the more valued superfoods from the sheer health benefits it poses to the body.

Mushrooms should be on your list because of the variety of vitamins and nutrients that they can add to your diet.

Spinach

I remember growing up watching Popeye chug down a can of spinach and instantaneously grew muscles to fight bad guys. However, many in variety, all of them are sure to be packed with a wide variety of nutrients and also have a low-calorie count. This super vegetable is packed with high amounts of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Vitamin K, Folate, Magnesium, and Phosphorous. The amount of vitamins and nutrients alone makes this vegetable a no-brainer when adding it to your planned superfood dietary regimen.

Spinach should make it to your top superfood selection for your super diet because of its nutrition value.

These Texas-grown superfoods above that are currently in-season are one of having the most value in terms of health if you’re planning to start out your year with a healthy diet. I, myself, have begun to stock up on these produce along with meats whenever I happen to shop at farmers markets. Always remember to get organic and locally sourced produce to make your planned super diet more super.
