It’s springtime! What’s in season in Texas? For me, this means morning runs in the awakening sunshine. And of course, what’s exercise without the nourishment of some fresh, healthy spring produce? Living in Texas, we’re blessed to have access to a variety of fruits and vegetables that are readily available at farmers’ markets and farm shops across the state.
If you’re unsure about what fruits and vegetables are in season in the Lone Star State this March, then we’ve got the perfect list for you.
Spring Produce: Vegetables
Broccoli
In season from December through May, broccoli is a super common vegetable at farmers' markets across Texas. Containing high amounts of vitamins C and K, this spring seasonal produce boasts an impressive range of important nutrients. This vegetable is also pretty versatile when it comes to dishes, and can be found in a variety of types of cuisines.
Spinach
Deliciously green and leafy, spinach (What wine goes well with spinach?) first arrived on American shores in the 17th century, and since then, it’s become a staple in all kinds of dishes. It’s considered a superfood due to the high amounts of vitamin K it contains, promoting bone development and blood health. This superhero vegetable is in season from November through April and can be bought at farmers' markets and farm shops across the Lone Star State.
Cauliflower
Cauliflower is in season this March, and is available from November through April. This spring produce is packed with vitamin C to help boost your immune system. Apart from being a versatile ingredient in many dishes, cauliflower can also be used as a low-carb replacement for rice (how long does rice last?) . There are even some barbecue joints that serve grilled cheesy cauliflower! My go-to meal for this vegetable is stir-fried cauliflower with broccoli (how long does broccoli last?) and wagyu tenderloin tips. Simply delicious!
Spring Seasonal Produce: Fruits
Oranges
One of the oldest and most-loved fruits in the world, the orange was first mentioned by civilisations over 4000 years ago. Packed with plenty of Vitamin C, this spring produce serves as an immune system booster for all who consume it. Oranges are available in Texas from September through April, so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy them!
Pomelos
What’s in season in Texas from October through May? The pomelo is a distant cousin of the grapefruit. However, unlike its relative, it can grow as big as a basketball. Its delicious citrus flavor makes it a refreshing addition to both salads and cocktails! As with most citrus fruits, the pomelo packs a huge amount of Vitamin C.
Strawberries
Strawberries are one of the most famous berries in the US, with 94% of American households consuming them on a regular basis. This fruit is in season from February till mid-May, so it’s time to stock up! Known to be a rather versatile berry when it comes to recipes, this spring seasonal produce goes beautifully in ice creams and jams. Strawberries have a good amount of immune system-boosting vitamin C, and contain plenty of manganese for healthy bone development.
Spring means spending time in the great outdoors and witnessing an abundance of produce at farmers' markets and farm shops. If you’re planning a market run this March, be sure to add these fruits and vegetables to your spring produce shopping list.
