It’s that time of the year again! For obvious reasons, it may not seem like it did previously, but there is no reason why you cannot have a total ball of a 4th of July celebration with your family while also maintaining safety precautions.
Doctors are warning that the barbecue season could have a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases that we are seeing. As Texas continues to grow in COVID-19 number of fatalities, it is of prime importance that we adhere to responsible socializing, restrict our mingling with others and be welcoming to those living by these welfare guidelines.
The Center for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) is imploring people to take required precautions this Independence Day. It is very important that we do this on a collective level to protect our vulnerable family, friends and community.
Some useful tips you could incorporate this year at the 4th of July celebrations while having a good time are:
Avoid gatherings like parades and festivals altogether
Host activities outdoors instead of indoors.
The fewer people involved, the lesser chances of exposure
Wear a face covering, when in public
Use disinfectants and sanitizers
While the protocol may seem inconvenient, these are pretty simple points to follow so we can reduce the burden on our already overwhelmed health care system.
Of course, if you are celebrating with, you won’t need to restrict activities with one another.
Now that we are familiar about safety precautions, it's time to have some fun!
Healthy 4th Of July Inspired Snacks For Kids
In a home with three young kids, every quarantine morning is a celebration. I was just running out of ideas for healthy snacks (What wine goes well with snacks?) when the Independence Day came out to rescue me. So, now we have a theme!
There are so many inspirational ideas on the internet for 4th July snacks, but is it just me or are there just too many sugar-loaded nutrient lacking concepts out there?? Does food on this occasion have to be added with harmful artificial food colorings? Determined to find out how I can make the celebratory meals enjoyable and nutritious, I went into my kitchen.
Here are some creative and entertaining snack options for this weekend !
Easy Patriotic Fruit Dessert
For an easy Independence Day desert, ripe luscious strawberries and plump juicy blueberries (how long do blueberries last?) set out on a tray are just perfect. But how do we add the white? Something to add a creamy bite. A very simple idea is to use some bars of white chocolate, but to give it that balance, you can serve pretzels (how long do pretzels last?) dipped in white chocolate along with the fruit. Prepare your white chocolate dipped pretzels beforehand simply by joining the pretzel in melted white chocolate, setting them out on a baking tray and allowing it to cool. Just spread them out alternating with the red berries and group all the blueberries in the corner. Voila!
Patriotic Breakfast Toast
This toast is the best breakfast bet for a celebratory 4th July morning. Filling, nutritious and adventurous, the patriotic breakfast toast will gear your little ones up for the rest of the day. I like toasting my whole wheat bread on the pan, makes it nice and crunchy. Depending on how much of a toast you kids like on the bread, you can alter the duration you leave the bread on the pan. Slather a generous layer of any nut butter (avocado spread does just fine too! or even cream cheese(how long does cream cheese last?). Top it with sliced bananas, finely sliced strawberries and blueberries cut into half. Serve immediately.
Patriotic Fruit And Nut Bites
These fruit and nut bites are crunchy, sweet and cool. If you're looking for something easy to make but are still well rounded, make sure you try them out.
You can easily make a big batch and store them for the time to come. All you need is:
Half Cup granola (how long does granola last?)
Half Cup slivered or sliced almonds (how long do almonds last?)
1 1/2 Cup vanilla Greek yogurt
1 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
Two dozen raspberries
Four dozen blueberries
Simply combine the vanilla greek yogurt and the lemon juice and set aside. Line 24 muffin cups wood liners and at the bottom add a teaspoon of granola. Next comes a teaspoon of slivered or sliced almonds (how long do almonds last?). Top of the almonds with a tablespoon of the yogurt and lemon juice mixture. Finish off with one fresh raspberry and two fresh blueberries on top. Freeze the muffin tray until it is well set. Afterwards, you can transfer the fruit and nut bites into a large zip lock bag for easy storage.
Consider disposables for easy and safe cleaning and always wear gloves when doing so. Avoid sharing food and condiments with others and keep dips and sauces in single serve mini bowls. Texas Real Food wishes all its readers a safe and vibrant 4th July weekend!
