6 Healthy Back To School Snacks

For many parents, the year actually begins in September and not January. It’s where all the activity is and when we wake up for a summer lull to brace our new obligations and face school first and foremost. A big part of this change should be taking care of your kids’ school healthy snacks (What wine goes well with snacks?). It’s easy to just let them buy something at school, but it’s also not the healthiest option out there.

Instead, take the time to prepare a few easy snacks yourself and that way you’ll be sure they are both healthy and delicious.

Why Nature-Conscious Kids Will Be Better Eaters

Fruit Kabobs

When it comes to simple and healthy snacks, this is the simplest as it can get. There’s practically no cooking and preparing involved at all. All you need is a rainbow of fruit and some frozen yogurt for dipping and you’re good to go. Try using raspberries, clementine oranges, pineapple, kiwi and grapes to get a diverse look, but you can add or subtract whatever your kids like.

Fruit Kabobs

Greek yogurt is the best way to go when it comes to dipping because it has more protein than ordinary yogurt and this should cover your kids for the time between launch and dinner.

Strawberry Energy Bites

You’ll need: 1 cup of strawberries, 1 cup of dry oats (how long do oats last?), ½ cup of sunflower seeds, and ½ cup of flour (how long does flour last?) and coconut. Place these in a food processor with one table spoon of coconut oil.  Blend until it becomes a fine paste and make into balls.

Strawberry Energy Bites

These should be refrigerated overnight to keep cool for your kids launch bag. They are good on their own, but if you want to add a bit of variety they also go well with some vanilla or yogurt.

Sugar Free Ice Pops

Store bought ice creams are usually filled with sugar and homemade ones, made from fruit and some additional sweetener if you want it, are a good replacement. Take a cup of fruit and put it in a blender, you could also add a bit of apple juice to help it mix better. Fill the mixture in zipzicle bag and freeze them. That’s the whole process and your kids will love it.

The recipe could change a bit based on what fruit you’re using. For instance, watermelons will need less juice since they are mostly made out of water, and pineapple will need more since it’s dry.

Apple Pie Snack Cups

Apple pies are everyone favorite sweets, but they take a while to make and they are not that easily transportable and thus not suited for a school snack. However, you can always improvise and make a tiny version that fits into a cup.

Use the graham crackers (how long does graham crackers last?) at the bottom so that they provide the structure for the apples (how long do apples last?) and cream. Add chopped apples on top of the crackers, and then add whipped cream on top of the apples and you got yourself a cup size little pie.

Peanut Butter And Jelly Tacos

There’s a lot you can do with the taco form since it’s perfectly made for snacks – it’s a hand sized dish that you can eat in a couple of bites. Depending on the taco it could be a sweet or savory dish and here’s a simple sweet one.

The tacos could be bought pre-made or you can make them yourself, and when it comes to peanut butter (how long does peanut butter last?) and jelly just treat it as you do when you make a sandwich. You could also mix things up by adding a strawberry or a blueberry as well.

Mini Muffins

Mini muffins are another great snack due to how easily they are packed and how small they are. It also allows you to mix and match flavors and have something all of your kids would like.  Raspberry and lemon muffins a good place to start since they are easy to make and they taste great.

Mini Muffins

The secret to these muffins is in the small details that make them different from ordinary muffins. These are mostly about using yogurt to keep the muffins mushy and using white whole wheat flour (how long does whole wheat flour last?) instead of the ordinary kind. Make sure you use fresh raspberries.

A Point About Meal Prep

Most modern parents are rather busy and they tend to make these snacks in advance. There’s nothing wrong with that since most of the meals could survive more than a few days while remaining eatable and even delicious if they are stored property.

The main problem with this kind of approach is that the snacks might get a bit boring if they are prepared for too long in advance. It’s therefore best to make one or two at once and mix and match them over the week.
