Healthy Halloween Snacks For Kids

2022 continues to be the epic year that it has been. Halloween on a Monday during daylight saving time..meaning we are getting a full extra hour of October 31st. Adding to the spookiness of the evening is the blue moon, which is the second full moon in a single month. And if you include healthy Halloween snacks (What wine goes well with snacks?), this year is going to be...

BLOCKBUSTER.

Now we know healthy and Halloween are two words with the same letter that do not go together. But that doesn't mean it can't be done. The whole misunderstanding that Halloween snacks are only fun when they involve candy has to be done away with this year. Fact is that fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are getting better and better at putting on their own costume show this time of the year. With these fun, creative, healthy Halloween foods, Fright Night is gonna be a hit!

How Do I Get My Kids Do Eat Healthy Halloween Snacks?

So, since my kids are still quite young, (oldest one not 6 yet), most years, on Halloween, they have a nutritious meal before heading out. This serves 2 main purposes- energizes them for the fun night ahead and fills their stomachs enough so they don’t O’D on sugar filled, brain numbing candy. Of course, these pre-β€˜trick o treatin’ meals aren’t plain ol’ daily meals. I try my creative best to incorporate the whole spirit (pun intended) of Halloween into the food I serve my family.

So, with no more fooling around, here are my top picks for healthy Halloween recipes your β€œboouys and ghouls” will love!

Healthy Halloween Snack Ideas With A Twist

Hard Boiled Spooky Eggs

Ain’t nothing like some spooky faces to β€œegg”cite the kiddos. These eggs are just plain hard boiled with some salt and water for 8-12 minutes. Drain them once they are done and let cool. After they are cooled and dry, get creative with your painting tools and draw out some Halloween special faces on the shells. These eggs are a great addition to a school lunch box for a healthy Halloween snack.

Spidery Hard-Boiled Eggs

Take the hard-boiled eggs one step further and peel the shell off. Halve the eggs and arrange sliced black olives in the shape of spiders. These creepy crawlers are sure to give you the heebie- jeebies!

Banana Ghosts, Clementine Pumpkins - Halloween Fruit Platter

These fruit platters are a hit whenever I have served them. Providing a decent dose of sugar with a good serving of fiber and other nutrients, craftily done fruit can be so natural as a healthy Halloween treat! They are super-duper easy to prepare and can be put together at the last moment!

Stuffed Jack β€˜O’ Lantern Peppers

Easy to carve out, just the right color and perfect to act as holders, these peppers dressed up as jack β€˜0’ lanterns are going to up the ante this Halloween. Gently carve out the peppers and place easy to munch on veggies sticks like bell peppers (What wine goes well with bell peppers?), carrot and radish sticks. They go very well with a pumpkin hummus dip.

Cheesy Pumpkin Quesadilla

This is one of my personal favorites. All you have to do is cut funny pumpkin faces onto one side of each flatbread. Lay a slice of Monterey Jack or mozzarella into the flatbread. Place a layer of cheddar cheese. Fold the flatbreads with the cheddar showing through the cuts in the flatbread. Bake for three to five minutes. Once it's done, remove and gently press the bread down so the cheese oozes through the holes.

Skeleton Veggie Platter With Labneh Dip

A detailed veggie version of a skeleton will be the highlight of your Halloween party table. Get your little ones to pitch in and go crazy creating the funkiest skeleton. Use cucumbers, bell peppers, olives, carrots (how long do carrots last?), broccoli and your favorite Greek yogurt dip to create this showstopper.

Whatever food we choose to serve this Halloween, this year is going to be both unique and unforgettable. let's remember to keep the distance and enjoy the festivities!
