Underwood’s Bar-B-Q Cafeteria, Brownwood

A visit to Underwood's Bar-B-Q cafeteria is like stepping back in time, reminiscent of generations past when M.E. Underwood, a butcher from Brady, sold barbecue door-to-door to support his family. 

After World War II, he settled in Brownwood. He opened a roadside stand that eventually evolved into the restaurant we know today. You can savor fried chicken, barbecue beef steak, ribs, and other Texan classics here. What sets it apart, though, are the cheerful employees who ensure you never have to leave your seat for more homemade rolls or whipped cream for your cobbler.

Youngblood's Cafe, Amarillo

Co-owner Tim Youngblood's journey from Durango, Colorado, to Amarillo eventually led to the establishment of Youngblood's Cafe in 2013, right in the heart of downtown Amarillo. Dutchman’s Hidden Valley, Hamilton

Once you pass the old-fashioned dime-store candy shop at the front, you'll discover a deli wonderland at Dutchman's Hidden Valley. They craft sandwiches on homemade bread with meats and cheeses, some of which are cured and smoked on-site. 

A favorite is the Spicy Dutchman sandwich, featuring jalapeño-and-cheese beef summer sausage, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle ranch dressing on toasted jalapeño bread. Alternatively, you can opt for the Wurst Plate, a sausage sampler served with German potato salad, slices of house-smoked Gruyère, and bread.

Crossvine Market, Waelder

Crossvine Market is home to the sage sausage that carries a rich history. Crafted initially by African-American preacher Rev. Barnes in the 1920s, it remains a beloved recipe. When Rudy and Deanna Orona reopened this grocery store and diner in 2012, they received the original sausage recipe from a Barnes family friend. 

People come from as far as Houston and San Antonio for this special sausage, made right on-site. Rudy also serves up cheeseburgers, brisket, and ribs, ensuring that locals can pick up essentials like a quart of milk without embarking on a lengthy drive.

Frank's Place Riverside Grill, Fentress

Frank's Place Riverside Grill, located in Fentress, is a humble eatery that caters to blue-collar budgets. Owners Frank and Susan Hernandez estimate that 80 percent of their customers are regulars, drawn by barbecue plates, half-pound fire-grilled cheeseburgers, and the Santa Fe-style enchiladas

Frank, inspired by his mom's Mexican restaurant near the New Mexico border, opened the restaurant in 2005 after retiring from Shell Oil. Today, folks from San Marcos and Luling make the trip to Fentress to dine at Frank's.

Miss Hattie's Restaurant and Cathouse Lounge, San Angelo

Brenda Gunter, San Angelo's first female mayor, owns the restaurant, known for its mesquite-smoked rib-eye with cilantro-horseradish sauce and bacon-wrapped jalapeño appetizer. Gunter views operating the restaurant as a unique opportunity to connect with the community and gauge its sentiments.

Neal’s Dining Room, Concan

Perched on a cliff overlooking the Frio River, Neal's Dining Room is the perfect spot to enjoy comfort food with a view. Established by Tom and Vida Thrift Neal in 1926, the riverside restaurant is now run by their great-grandson, Chase Roosa. 

The menu includes the original chicken-fried steak and fried chicken recipes alongside sides like lima beans (how long do lima beans last?) and corn on the cob. During summer, the best seats are outdoors on the open-air patio, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills and floating tubers.

King's Inn, Riviera

King's Inn is a true Gulf Coast icon located on the shoreside of Cayo del Grullo and east of Riviera. It evolved from a 1930s fishing pier, bait shop, and snack shack called Orlando's. It was founded by locals Orlando Underbrink and Blanche "Mom" Wright. In 1945, Cottle Ware and his wife, Alta Faye, took over, renaming it King's Inn. Today, their son Randy continues the tradition. 

The menu boasts standard seafood fare like fresh Gulf shrimp, prepared fried or broiled, with all entrées and sides served family-style. Don't miss the Bombay Salad, a creamy curried avocado on an iceberg wedge with sliced tomatoes and a pickled pepper. And remember the house rule: hats off before dining.

Schnitzel, Vidor

After Hurricane Rita wreaked havoc on the East Texas coast, German native Monica Herring opened Schnitzel. This small, cash-only restaurant honors her grandma's recipes. With sister Ursula in the kitchen, they create mouthwatering dishes like pork cutlets (schnitzel), beef stew, potato salad, purple sauerkraut (how long does sauerkraut last?), and sauerbraten (beef pot roast). 

Their authentic German fare has drawn fellow Germans all the way from Houston for a taste.
