4 Local Stores in New Braunfels You Must Know About

Founded in 1845, the city of New Braunfels boasts a highly diversified quality of life for its citizens and visitors. The city is widely known for its German festivals and river floating but businesses, specifically local stores, are no exception to this eclectic-ness.

In this article, we listed 4 of the most popular local shops found in the city that brings about a pure, diverse shopping experience to both locals and tourists alike. These local stores, of course, feature artisan products as well as organic, sustainable foods and beverages

Old Gruene Market Days

The Old Gruene Market Days has been running for 30+ years now. If you’re wanting to witness the old, traditional way of Texas trading — a.k.a. when the community gathers at the town center to “trade-off” their wares — then, you must make sure to visit this market!

Market days usually fall on the third weekend of each month from February to December. If the whole concept doesn’t excite you more than it probably should, it’s good to know that there are more than 100 artisans who proudly sell their handmade and handcrafted items in the Greune Historic District!

If you’re fond of packaged foods and spices, worry not as there are also a couple of vendors offering such products in this market. Generally, though, the organizers don’t allow mass-produced, machine-made, imported, bought on wholesale, or collectible items. Applications for food concessions are also not accepted.

To give you a clearer picture of the market, most of the vendors found in the Old Gruene Market Days are woodworkers, jewelry makers, and other artists selling one-of-a-kind artworks featuring different types of media. Fiber, metal, leather, glass, stone, and wood… name it, they have it!

1724 Hunter Rd, New Braunfels, TX 78130. Call (830) 832-1721. Visit Old Gruene Market Days for more information.

For this year, Gourmage is celebrating 11 wonderful years as the ultimate destination for artisan cheese in historic downtown New Braunfels. This local store entices customers with their cheese-wheel cakes and blue cheese-dark chocolate truffles (What wine goes well with truffles?).

Their artisanal, gourmet cheese platters are well known around town. No two are alike, but all are tasteful in every sense of the word. They’ve become so popular that the customers generally want Gourmage to prepare the platters as “cheesemonger’s choice” which means they choose the cheeses on the platter.

Gourmage has a small cafe that features dishes crafted from Richardson’s robust selection like gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and Gorgonzola ice cream with candied walnuts (how long do walnuts last?). You’re in it for more — several other gourmet goodies including dips, jams, coffee, tea, olives, and a whole lot others are also offered by the store!

270 West San Antonio St., New Braunfels, TX 78130. Call (830) 214-6471. Visit Gourmage for more information.
