Kiss The Ground: A Change in Perspective on the Beautiful Earth Beneath Us

What Lies Beneath: The Answer?

In this riveting film, Woody Harrelson describes how regenerative farming is the solution to climate change we have been looking for all along. Kiss The Ground shows there is one simple solution to help heal our planet: soil, earth, ground. The film will teach you how to become an agent in humanity’s single most important and time sensitive mission. Reverse climate change and effectively save the world—all through the choices you make in how and what to eat. Josh Tickell, one of America’s most celebrated documentary filmmakers and director of Fuel, has dedicated most of his life to saving the environment.  This 2020 documentary was made after the huge success of the Kiss the Ground book, which can be found here.

What Lies Beneath: The Answer

What lies beneath our feet can be used as the #1 solution for balancing our climate & replenishing our ecosystems. Stemming back to the 1930s, when president Roosevelt created the Soil Conservation Service and the NRCS was formed, our soils have been protected for a reason. The Dust Bowl showed the devastating effects of tilling done by farmers and massive erosion due to agriculture. More than 40 million people each year are considered refugees due to desertification and are being pushed from their land due to damaged soils.

Celebrity Activists Commit to Climate Change

Celebrities and climate activists are interviewed such as Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady, and Ian Somerhalder. Interviews with climate experts and conservation agronomists, such as Ray Archuela, show there is a social problem involving educating farmers on best practices. Carbon experts state how our soil is actually carbon fixed and full of microbes - it’s alive!

Celebrity Activists Commit to Climate Change

Ironically, the same exact chemicals that were used in gas chambers during the holocaust were brought to the U.S. and rebranded as a “cure-all” for pests that farmers encounter. This has left our soils nutritionally depleted and since they hold the power to life itself - people who eat the food from these soils suffer, if food can even be grown at all. Lawsuits surrounding the use of Glyphosate (found in Round-Up) and civilizations failing due to damaged soils show the importance of Regenerative Farming

Why This Documentary Matters

Kiss the Ground is a compelling documentary that offers the educational history of our soils. Interviews with experts and celebrities broadcast important solutions to our problem. According to the film, we have 60 years of topsoil left - that’s 60 harvests. We must teach farmers the importance of crop variation, no tilling, grazing plans for cows, and compost. As a consumer we must value the importance of a regenerative diet, grow what we can & support the farmers who use best practices!

Controversial Topics

Both Kiss The Ground and Gather - raise questions about our food system. Yet both documentaries do an amazing job at showing different perspectives and topics.  By watching each documentary, you are able to see how they work together and help fill in the informational gaps.  We need to understand our food systems better, and the information available needs to be more transparent. Native Americans are struggling to recover their hunting and farming systems.  A vicious campaign of colonial greed and industrialized agriculture has led to these natives to suffer.

Further Research

When we all share the same planet, there's no need overtake land or practices. There's no need to criticize traditional methods that have been used for decades. We can actually learn from these strategies and use them to implement new changes.

You can check out the TRF review of the Oxford Real Farming Conference, which shares a lot of valuable material on regenerative farming and solutions for today. For more documentaries that are educational and inspiring, here is our 2020 Holiday Film Guide.
