The Sustainable Table Blog: Ethical Eating Unleashed

Ethical Eating

In hopes of creating a blog to promote ethical eating, Sustainable Table was founded in 2009 by Cassie Duncan. As a result,  the environmental non-profit now exceeds expectations by offering so much more. Based in Australia, the mission of this blog is to provide the tools and information needed to make ethical eating easy. It offers shopping guides, recipes, downloadable resources, eco-friendly shopping, and insight on how to get involved.

Where to Get Sustainable Foods in Texas

Why it Matters

The term "ethical eating" refers to the moral consequences involved with our food choices. Many people in today's world are suffering from poverty or scarcity in food choices. The way our food is grown, manufactured and distributed is causing serious damage to our environment, farmers, animals, communities and health. Fun fact - our food choices make up 30% - 60% of our personal eco-footprint! Given that, it's important to calculate your ecological footprint to see where you stand, you may be surprised.

What Is Farm-to-Table?

The Mission of Sustainable Table

At Sustainable Table, Duncan and her team are working to build an engaged community of people who want to learn about sustainable food production. For instance, the team addresses how society can support a food system that restores and nurtures the natural systems it relies upon. The non-profit does an astonishing job at designing challenging and creative events and campaigns.

Transitional Texas Farms: Supporting Sustainable Agriculture

Currently, the main campaigns promoted are:

Ripe for Change:  a location-based collaborative funding model that supports food-system innovation. It works by sharing stories and educational content.  With this intention, Sustainable Table has a mission to help people overcome today’s environmental challenges - one meal at a time.

The Mission of Sustainable Table

Give A Fork!:  a campaign aimed at bringing about positive change through the food we eat. The campaign is very attractive through social media and has even coined the term Grexy - “Green” and “Sexy”. It gets people thinking about the environmental and ethical impact of the food we buy, whilst introducing it in a fun a catchy way.

The Outcome

The outcome of browsing through Sustainable Table might be that you eat a little less meat, bring your own cup, or prioritize using reusable bags. Although, it may also result in you having a radical awakening and move to the country to start an organic farm or learn about regenerative agriculture. Regardless, small changes add up to a collaborative effort that we drastically need. I found this blog to be absolutely inspiring, as a sustainability graduate student this is exactly what I want to do one day. There is even an option to hire Cassie Duncan and her team for public speaking, blog writing and sustainable consulting!
