One of the most transfixing documentaries on industrial agriculture of all time, Food, Inc. has got to be on the top of your list! The industry is exposed in a way that encourages consumers to research their options, and even transform their diet in a way that is more sustainable and nutritious. Being the first of its kind, Food, Inc. encouraged the production of many other films exposing the truth about farming animals for food.

What Hides Behind Our Food Labels
Many food labels today depict an idyllic pastoral image of American farming. The sun rises and sets behind rustic red barns and beautiful farmhouses. Contented cows graze and roam free, under the watch of a cattle dog. Unfortunately, many family farms have become a thing of the past due to industrial agriculture. When farmland comes on the market, corporations outbid local buyers. Farmers who are bought out by large corporations are also encouraged to grow certain crops: soy, corn, wheat & barley (how long does barley last?). All of which are used to feed the animals housed in small cages and being mass produced.

There is a vicious cycle of manipulation in the form of where and how our food is being produced. Whether it be meat, produce or dairy - large corporations are the puppeteers.“There are no seasons in the American supermarket,” the unidentified voice intones in the opening scene of Food, Inc., as the camera sweeps the aisles of a heavily stocked supermarket. From there the director Robert Kenner jumps all over the food map, from industrial feedlots where millions of cruelly crammed cattle suffer until slaughter, to the chains where millions of consumers gobble down industrially produced meat and an occasional serving of bacteria. Newer documentaries are influenced by Food, Inc., such as Kiss The Ground. This documentary show how farmers are still fighting against large corporations, but have more options today.

Choose Local Farming
If you’ve read either Fast Food Nation or The Omnivore’s Dilemma, you won’t be surprised by what the movie shows and tells about the brutality in the meat industry. The movie takes a look at the animal abuse in industrial food production. After watching a documentary like this, your perspective of what makes a good lunch might change forever. Your best hope of finding real food grown by real farmers is at a local farmers' market. It's not entirely a matter of "organic" produce, although usually it is. I feel the importance of educating ourselves and others by watching documentaries like this is key to using our voice and creating a movement.
