Best Farmers Markets In Texas

Austin is the home to some of the best farmers markets in Texas. We take great pride in our produce and the artisans working in Texas, and farmers markets are a place to showcase that amazing work. They are also more than that for most people. The markets also organize concert, charitable events, and education workshops and in general work as a pillar of the community since so many businesses and day to day lives revolve around them.

Here are a few farmers markets in Texas you should visit.

SFC Farmers Market Downtown: Austin

This farm is one that should be visited by those who come to Austin as a tourist and want to see what the local farmers and the locals who simply want the produce to make a quick and healthy launch. The produce sold at this market is locally and sustainably grown.

The philosophy of this market comes from its roots in the community gardening in 1970s. Their goal is to support local farmers and to work on the farm to table principle. The market also works with “The happy kitchen” which is a dietary education program.

Texas Farmers Market At Lakeline: Cedar Park

This is one of the favorite local markets and it’s partly due to the quality of the produce it offers and partly due to its beautiful location and enough space to walk around with your family. The market works on Sundays from 9 AM to 1 PM regardless of the weather.

This farmers market also has a long term composting program in cooperation with businesses and individual households in the community. They take out your trash and in return they get to keep it as compost. The key condition is that you keep the trash stored in manner set up by the market.

Texas Farmers Market At Mueller: Austin

Texas Farmers Market at Mueller is located in an old airport hangar and that’s what provides just enough shade to shop on hot day in Texas weather. This market is open on Wednesdays from 5 pm - 8 pm and on Sundays from 10 am - 2 pm.

This is the farmers market that organizes the fermentation festival as well, which is a yearly event dedicated to all things fermentation related from selling such produce to teaching workshop that will provide the average market goer with the knowledge needed to ferment their own products.

Grand Prairie Farmers Market: Grand Prairie

It’s a local market, opened on Sundays only and every Sunday morning the market is packed full with the locals and those coming from all over the state to get the produce out there. It also features a variety of different produce from candles to small art works made by local artisans.

The difference between Grand Prairie Farmers Market and the other farmers markets is that this one is run by the city and the local municipality institutions on which it is based. This means that it’s seen as a communal and a community market and everyone treat it as such.

Coppell Farmers Market: Coppell

It’s a year round market which is great for home owners and those who care about their family’s diet. It means that they get to have seasonal produce and mix things up in the kitchen without healthy diet getting boring.  It’s open on Saturdays from 8am-12pm in Old Town Coppell underneath a pavilion.

The market is supported by the city of Coppell, but it was established by the citizens themselves in 2003. It’s taxed as a charitable organization which means that you could donate to the market and get a tax refund.

Urban Harvest East Side Farmers Market: Houston

Houston doesn’t have a lot of farmers markets.  It’s an urban area and the trend of small urban farms have not yet come to it as it is to some other urban areas of Texas. However, this small market is still one of the most popular in the state and rather well organized one.

It’s founded in 1994 and it has an all-volunteer board of directors that works on it and this was the case even when market was much smaller. It also provides education for those who want to get in the business of growing food.

Why It’s Important?

Knowing and visiting and even working with local farms is an important task for those who live in a rural state. That’s because it’s a way to promote local communities and local farmers and vendors. It’s also important since it’s a source of local and healthy food.

All of these farmers markets in Texas also offer a variety of other events such as education and artisan products and charitable events. That’s what the communities are and that’s how you should try to support yours by having healthy food.
