Get Your Thanksgiving Turkey From These Texan Farms!

Discover > Farm to Table Eating in Texas > Get Your Thanksgiving Turkey From These Texan Farms!

Updated for 2023.

A perfectly roasted and juicy turkey at the centre of the table is one of the best things about Thanksgiving.

But what if you miss out on getting a turkey?

As per this report from the New York Post, meat producers and distributors are concerned over a possible turkey shortage, particularly on smaller birds; under 16 pounds.

The tiny turkey trend from last year seems all set to return this year as well, as families continue to plan intimate celebrations because of the pandemic. Just like the several shortages that we witnessed at the grocery store over the last year-and-a-half, a lack of suitable turkey could affect your dinner options this season.

You might be asking yourself, where can I find fresh turkey near me? To ensure you stay on top of this year’s Thanksgiving turkey game, TexasRealFood brings you some of the best farms to procure a sustainable, pasture-raised, antibiotic-free turkey for gracing your dining table!

Prairie Oasis Farm, Millsap-DFW

Allen and Kim Boone of Prairie Oasis Farm believe in gently raising animals with plenty of access to fresh air, clean water, green grass and sunshine. If you’re looking for organic free range turkey near you for Thanksgiving, Prairie Oasis Farm is offering fresh pasture-raised turkey, raised for this purpose.  For a deposit of $30, you can preorder your bird that will weigh between 15-20 lbs. Their rate per pound at pickup is $5.29 (minus deposit).

Contact Prairie Oasis Farm at (817) 550-7022 for more details, or book your bird here.

Burgundy Pasture Beef, Dallas

Burgundy's Local Dallas offers 100% grass-fed beef and lamb, pasture-raised chicken, pork, and rabbit, raw milk cheeses, free-range pastured eggs, and more. For this year's thanksgiving, they are partnering with Prairie Oasis Farm to offer you pasture-raised turkey at the Burgundy Pasture Beef butcher house. Towards the end of October, you can go pick a dressed and frozen bird on a first-come-first-served basis.

If you want a dressed bird closer to Thanksgiving weekend, reservations are open from the 1st of October for $25 here at Burgundy Pasture Beef

Shady Grove Ranch, Jefferson

Matt and Jerica Cadman established Shady Grove Ranch in 2008 with a goal to have steady access to pastured meat for their family.

Their TTs are soy-free, naturally raised, and available to those in East Texas (Longview, Tyler, Marshall, Jefferson) and North Louisiana (Shreveport, Bossier) areas.

Available during the season only, these non-medicated, non-GMO fed turkeys are the tastiest turkeys you’ll ever have. They also cook 25% faster than conventionally raised turkeys which is a small bonus.

The bird comes ready to cook and frozen and includes the giblets. Pickup is available at the ranch by appointment, or at any of their designated monthly drop spots in the cities of Longview, Tyler, Marshall, and Shreveport.

Shady Grove Ranch requests interested folks to sign up for their newsletter for thanksgiving updates as they plan to have freshly harvested turkeys by the end of September. Also, stay tuned with the latest happenings at the farm through their social media.

Roam Ranch, San Antonio

ROAM Ranch is home to 400 of only around 30,000 heritage-breed turkeys in the world. Unlike conventional and oversized GMO “Butterball” turkeys, heritage breed turkeys at ROAM ranch are raised wild and free to live in pasture with their herd of 150 bison. With a natural lifecycle and plenty of real nutrition, the resulting meat is rich, flavorful, and moist.

The ROAM Ranch annual Turkey Harvest Event is hosted to coincide with Thanksgiving. At this event, families have the opportunity to witness first-hand the environment in which their turkey has been raised and work together to harvest, butcher and prepare their own Thanksgiving turkey.

Attendees will leave with a heritage breed turkey of their choice to cook for an epic Thanksgiving meal.

For $175.00 per bird, you and your family can enjoy a Thanksgiving experience like never before and it covers the cost of your turkey plus harvesting/butchery instruction.  Apart from harvesting the turkey yourself, they also sell by the pound at $12.99/lb. Their hens range from 8 to 12 lbs while their toms are from 14 to 18 lbs.

Tickets are flying fast, so book yours for any of the two dates here!
