Booze & Sandwich Pop-up

One of Midtown, Texas’ beloved sandwich and bar destinations, Winnie’s, is gearing up for a gastronomic event that is sure to make your mouth water. Inviting Houston’s best food and drink icons to strut their stuff, this pop-up series is dedicated to raising money for the Southern Smoke Foundation.
Launched in January and expected to run until the 4th of April, the Southern Smoke pop-up shall see participating food experts collaborating with Winnie’s team to each come up with three featured cocktails and a sandwich – a solid pairing in my opinion. The sales will directly benefit workers in the hospitality industry through the Southern Smoke Foundation, established by James Beard Award winner Chris Shepherd.
This series of tasty events all kicked off from a friendship between industry friends in the Houston area and their collective love for the classic snack time favorite – the sandwich. The Winnie’s team and their friends from the food industry started asking the public to find out if the event would be a hit. Receiving overwhelmingly positive responses, they started adding more dates to the program. This has made their event more accessible, allowing more Texans to try out one of their cocktail-sandwich pairings.
These pop-up events started on January 24, 2022, and are scheduled to end on April 4. Each pop-up will feature fantastic bartenders, winners of the CultureMap Tastemaker Awards, and even dynamic duos working their magic behind the bar for the first time in years. Scheduled from 8:00 pm until midnight, each pop-up is sure to give you enough time to get stuffed and buzzed!
Here’s the scheduled lineup:
January 31: Rebecca Burkhart (Johnny’s Gold Brick) and Justin Ware (Night Shift)
February 7: Alex Negranza (March) and Taylor Wright (Night Shift)
February 14: Lindsey Rae (Two-Headed Dog)
February 28: Westin Galleymore (Underbelly Hospitality) and Chris Shepherd

This week’s special will feature the magic of Ware and Burkart, with a pairing of three popping cocktails and a chicken parmesan (What wine goes well with chicken parmesan?) sub filled with hearty portions of bacon-tomato gravy, garlic-thyme mayo, cherry pepper relish, and fresh arugula. Also, check out Winnie’s social media pages for announcements of upcoming drink-sandwich pairings as events draw near.
I don’t know about you but I’m keen on checking out these booze-sandwich pairings at this fantastic culinary pop-up.
