Duckworth Vodka is committed to producing hand-made, small-batch art in a bottle through the wide array of their vodka flavors brought about by Lee Fuqua. Duckworth is named after his grandfather, H. E. Duckworth, a pioneer in the Texas fruit juice business.
His grandfather served as an inspiration for Lee’s commitment to developing the finest spirits. After traveling and sampling different flavors and techniques from all around the world, Lee with his wife, Julia, returned to Dallas to begin the quest.
Humble beginnings
Lee graduated at the top of his class from the T.V. Munson Center for Viticulture & Enology Studies at Grayson College (1997) in Sherman, Texas. It took him several years before he got everything together to start Fuqua Winery Dallas.
After running the winery for 8 years, he unfortunately became diabetic because there was something in the wine — not precisely sugar, but one of the 200+ components in it — that made his blood sugar go sky high.

Knowing that he could consume any dry spirit without inflicting harm to his condition, it was decided that the winery is to become a distillery. The distillery is using a lot of the same equipment that was used in their wine production — they added a still (see photo above) which, of course, they needed to learn how to use it without blowing it up.

Sourcing Ingredients
Years ago in Hawaii, they tasted a local vodka named Ocean Vodka. It was very good and was made from locally grown sugarcane. Lee thought of seeking out any cane grown in Texas, just in case they were to make vodka. It turns out that there are 40,000 acres of cane growing on the southern tip of Texas in three counties. This being said, they use cane juice mostly from Texas and Louisiana (sometimes).

Duckworth’s wines have won numerous Gold and Double Gold Medals in San Francisco and New York. After such success, their spirits came next. It wasn’t long after when Duckworth Vodka won a bronze medal for it.
As competitive and “thirsty” Lee was for success, he went back to the laboratory to do better — striking silver and gold respectively from the largest alcohol competitions in the world! Exactly a year after, he won the best vodka in the world at the same event. It just took Lee about a year and a half to develop his “bad” vodka to the best vodka the world has ever known.

The unflavored “sipping” vodka is their ultimate bestseller. It is a very extreme, clean vodka that goes down like water, and apparently, it’s distilled seven times and then filtered over 1,000 times through diamonds. It’s the only vodka in the world filtered through both Herkimer diamonds and real diamonds. Duckworth Vodka’s bottling manager, Geoffrey Pingree, says that the diamond filtration makes the vodka flow more smoothly over your palate.
The second best is the French Oak Vodka which starts as the same super clean vodka and gets a short rest in new French oak wine barrels. It picks up quite a bit of vanillin which tastes like real sweet vanilla, but there is no sugar.
The Dry Grapefruit - Mango Vodka, great around the pool with a little sparkling water in it. The Truffle Flavored Vodka comes last because it is intended for an exclusive market as truffles (What wine goes well with truffles?) cost $2,000 to $3,000 a pound. Their Truffle Vodka is over-the-top for making truffle flavored Bloody Marys, purely made with real truffle and not chocolate.

Where to Catch Duckworth Vodka
A great place to buy Duckworth Vodka products is through their distillery located between Highland Park and Love Field. When you do so, you can meet the distiller, ask all the questions you want, have a tour, and then sample all the vodkas — and now gin — all for free! The tasting room is open Monday-Friday from 12:00 pm until 6:00 pm. You may also set an appointment anytime except on Sundays.
