Houston Unwraps New Black-Owned Supermarket This Holiday Season

Black Friday is known as the kickoff of the holiday season, sending consumers into an annual shopping frenzy. In Houston, one new business owner marked the weekend with a different kind of launch, opening a brand new Black-owned supermarket for the local community.

Located on Cypress Creek Parkway, District Market Green Grocer has opened its doors, offering products such as fresh produce and home essentials from more than thirty local Black-owned and operated businesses. Many vendors collaborating with District Market have struggled for years to form long-term partnerships with grocers in the Houston area. Owner Robert Thomas set out to solve this lack of representation, opening the 4,000 square foot market on the busiest shopping weekend of the entire year.

“ I want to be in the running with HEB, Kroger, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s,” says Thomas. “I want to get to that level, and I’m taking the Black vendors with me.”

From grocery essentials to handmade bath items, the vendors of District Market have something for everyone. Husband and wife duo Malcom and Daranne Wilson own Soul Roll: a company specializing in unique egg rolls with a soul food twist.

“We bring a little soul to the egg roll,” Malcom Wilson explains. “[Such as] our Soul Roll, which has collard greens and smoked turkey, and or Down South Roll which has oxtails, rice, and cabbage.”

The District Market sports many additional charming features, including a juice bar which was unveiled at the store’s grand opening this past Friday.

“You can pick out your fruits and vegetables and take it to the bar, we’ll juice it for you,” Thomas explains. “I have Wheatgrass shots, turmeric health shots.”

The District Market Green Grocer is located at 3337 Cypress Creek Parkway, Suite A in Houston. Operating hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10AM to 9PM.
