Texas Restaurant Owner Donates Baby Formula Amid Ongoing Shortages

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers around the globe have become all-too-familiar with the challenges of supply chain shortages. The most recent product pinch has families more concerned than ever, as baby formula becomes increasingly scarce on grocery store shelves across the nation.

Life in Self-Quarantine: Down to Long Life Foods

The events of recent months have created a perfect storm: long-term economic pressure combined with supply chain distribution issues and ongoing geopolitical concerns have resulted in a crisis that experts believe could persist for weeks to come.

February marked the beginning of the baby formula shortage, after Abott’s specialized, low-mineral formula known as “Similac” was pulled from shelves due to a recall from the US Food and Drug Administration. Additional products such as their “Elecare” and “Alimentum” formulas were recalled by Abott as well, as they had been linked to cases of Cronobacter and Salmonella infections. As parents grapple with this latest uncertainty, one Texas restaurant owner is determined to make a difference in his local community.

Texas Restaurant Owner Donates Baby Formula Amid Ongoing Shortages

Benji Arslanovski, owner of Our Place Restaurant in Mansfield, began distributing free baby formula the other week to parents in need.

“The need is just tremendous,” Benji emphasized in a statement to USA Today. “The message is, ‘Help your neighbor.’”

By the end of April, nearly 40% of popular baby formula brands were sold out at major retailers nationwide, according to a recent report from Datasembly. The Food and Drug Administration has assured consumers it is doing everything in their power to ease the shortage strain. This message comes as President Joe Biden warns it could be, at minimum, a matter of weeks before formula is restocked on American shelves.

Once a healthcare account manager for US Foods, Arslanovski now purchases from the food distributor as a restaurant owner. Last week, Arslanovski noticed through US Foods that baby formula was in stock, and made the decision to purchase some for his fellow community members. At the time of publication, Our Place has distributed 56 cases – 224 cans – of Gerber’s Gentle Pro infant formula. An additional 105 cans were donated for distribution from a local hospital.

“The community has been great to me during COVID,” Arslanovski explained. “Business would stop by, they would tip servers, even though we weren’t open for dining. Every day was a blessing. So, this is my way of returning the favor of how they took care of me.”

Tranda Franklin, a grandmother desperately searching for formula for her 10-month old grandson, told The Dallas Morning news she’d contacted Our Place after hearing about their distribution efforts.

“They called me to tell me the formula had come, and when I got there they had a can waiting for me,” Franklin said. “This is such a blessing. It’s been very stressful. With gas prices like they are and having to go from place to place looking for formula only to be unsuccessful, it’s very difficult. We were on our last can of formula for my grandson, and we only had enough to make about three or four more bottles.”

For as long as possible, Benji Arslanovski plans to keep purchasing and donating as many cases as he can.

“If they have it in stock, I’m gonna buy it,” said Arslanovski. “Keep doing it until I feel like either they don’t have it or they catch up with production. Hopefully our country can catch up with everything soon. It’s been difficult times.”
