Braised carrots (how long do carrots last?)are a delicious and flavorful side dish that can be enjoyed year-round. However, when carrots are in season, they tend to be at their freshest and most flavorful. In Texas, carrots are typically in season during the fall and winter months, from September through February. During this time, you can find locally grown carrots that are at their peak in terms of flavor and texture.

What is Braising?

Braising is a cooking technique that involves cooking food slowly in a small amount of liquid at a low temperature. This method is often used for tougher cuts of meat or vegetables to make them tender and infuse them with flavor. When it comes to braising carrots, the process involves cooking them gently in a flavorful liquid until they become soft and flavorful.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to braise carrots:

  1. Prepare the Carrots

Start by washing and peeling the carrots. You can leave them whole or cut them into smaller, uniform pieces if desired. Keeping them whole can help them retain their shape during the braising process.

  2. Choose a Braising Liquid

Select a flavorful liquid to cook the carrots in. This can include vegetable or chicken broth (how long does chicken broth last?), wine, stock, or a combination of these. The liquid will add moisture and enhance the taste of the carrots.

  3. Heat a Skillet or Dutch Oven

Place a skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat on the stovetop. Add a small amount of oil, butter, or a combination of both to the pan and let it melt.

Avoid the crowds and shop for skillet or Dutch oven online from the comfort of your home!

  4. Sauté the Carrots

Once the oil or butter is heated, add the carrots to the pan. Season them with salt, pepper, and any other desired spices or herbs. Sauté the carrots for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to develop a slight golden color.

  5. Add the Braising Liquid

Pour the chosen braising liquid into the skillet, enough to partially submerge the carrots. The liquid should come about halfway up the sides of the carrots. This will allow them to cook in the flavorful liquid.

  6. Simmer the Carrots

Bring the liquid to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet or Dutch oven with a lid to trap the steam and maintain a steady temperature. Allow the carrots to simmer slowly in the liquid for about 20 to 30 minutes or until they are tender. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size and thickness of the carrots.

  7. Check for Doneness

After the suggested cooking time, check the carrots for tenderness. They should be easily pierced with a fork but still retain their shape. If they need more time, continue simmering until they reach the desired consistency.

  8. Serve and Enjoy

Once the carrots are tender, you can remove them from the braising liquid and serve them immediately. The braising liquid can be reduced further, if desired, to create a flavorful sauce to drizzle over the carrots before serving.

Once the braised carrots are ready, you can serve them as a delightful side dish alongside roasted meats (What wine goes well with roasted meats?), grilled poultry, or even as a vegetarian option paired with grains or legumes. The braising process helps to infuse the carrots with the flavors of the fennel seeds, (how long do fennel seeds last?) thyme, and butter, resulting in a dish that is rich, tender, and full of depth. Enjoy!
