The Texas Favorite: Grapefruit Paloma Cocktail

Discover > Texas Recipes > The Texas Favorite: Grapefruit Paloma Cocktail

The Paloma Cocktail is arguably one of the more famous cocktails in Texas. This citrus-heavy cocktail has gained its popularity in the Lone Star State because of how readily available the ingredients are. You have the Silver Tequila from Cat Tequila that uses only the best agave grown in Jalisco, Mexico’s rich blue volcanic soil, citrus from different fruit orchards across the state, and, of course, a Texan that’s ready to enjoy a cold highball glass of The Paloma.

Let’s not forget that Texas Grapefruits, especially the ruby red, is arguably, if not, the best grapefruit in the world with its sweet taste and full flavor just makes the Texas Paloma something that’s perfect for a quiet night at home or even after a long day at ranch.

If you’re having visions of a cold glass of this classic Texas favorite, here’s how to make it at home without having to drive over to your favorite bar or lounge.

Why Texas Grapefruits to Use for The Paloma Cocktail?

The Texas grapefruit season runs from late October through early May. Texas is the biggest producer of grapefruits in the United States, and our grapefruits are some of the best in the country, if not the world!

The grapefruits that are grown in Texas are a deep red color, and they have a tart, tangy flavor. They are perfect for making paloma drinks, as their flavor pairs well with tequila and lime juice.

If you're looking for a delicious and refreshing drink to enjoy during the Texas grapefruit season, be sure to try a paloma!

Grapefruit Paloma Ingredients

  • 1 Oz Tequila Fire

  • ¾ Oz fresh lime juice

  • ½ Oz grapefruit juice

  • ¼ simple syrup (or to taste)

  • Club soda

  • Salt (for rimming glass)

  • Lime wedge (for garnish)

Grapefruit Paloma Preparation

  1. Rim a highball glass with salt.

  2. Add tequila, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and simple syrup to the glass.

  3. Fill the rest of the way with club soda and stir gently.

  4. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy!

This refreshing cocktail is known to be a great summer treat after working a long hot day. Personally, I prefer the Paloma over its cousin the Margarita. The blend of lime juice and sweet grapefruit mingles well with the sharp taste of tequila blanco that’s topped with a bit of sweetness and fizz. This, for me, gives the Paloma its edge over the margarita.
