How to Make Agua de Horchata - Traditional Mexican Recipe
Discover > Texas Recipes > How to Make Agua de Horchata - Traditional Mexican Recipe
Agua de Horchata or 'rice (how long does rice last?) water' is a traditional Latin American drink made with rice, milk, sugar, and a dash of cinnamon. Many countries have their own variant of this drink. Personally, I love this Mexican version of horchata. This white beverage that bubbles away in the corner of every Mexican taqueria can quite easily be made at home with a few pantry staples. Creamy, slightly nutty, sweet, refreshingly cool, this agua de horchata served on the rocks,s ideal for a hot summer day, or as an accompaniment with your favorite chili nachos or fajitas.

Making Agua de Horchata
Soak Rice and Cinnamon
Take rice in a bowl, add hot water and allow the rice to soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can also soak the rice overnight. The longer rice soaks, the creamier your horchata will be. In another saucepan, take a cup of water, add cinnamon sticks (how long do cinnamon sticks last?) and bring to a boil. Once the water starts bubbling, turn off the heat and allow it to cool.
I always prefer buying a mixing bowl, saucepan, and cinnamon sticks online because of the added convenience!
Blend All Ingredients Together
Add the cinnamon sticks with cinnamon-soaked water and the rice along with the water to a blender. Blend everything into a fine pasty liquid. Then using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain out the liquid. Press down the pulp to get all the juices of the rice and cinnamon into the liquid mix
Skip the lines and order your blender and fine mesh strainer online for a stress-free shopping experience!
Add Sugar and Evaporated Milk
To the strained liquid, add sugar (how long does sugar last?) and mix well till the sugar is completely dissolved. Then pour in the evaporated milk (how long does evaporated milk last?) and mix again.
Save time and effort by ordering sugar online!
Serve Agua de Horchata Chilled!
Fill up a serving glass with 3 to 4 ice cubes, pour in the Horchata, sprinkle cinnamon powder on top, and serve chilled!
For the most extensive selection, I suggest buying cinnamon powder online!
