Wishing Our Readers, A Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a significant holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. With its roots in Texas, Juneteenth has grown into a nationwide celebration of freedom, unity, and African American heritage.

The Historical Significance of Juneteenth

Juneteenth, also called the Freedom Day or Emancipation day,  depending on where you're located, has been a celebratory occasion for Texans for more than 150 years. In 1865, almost two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, the enslaved African Americans of Galveston were finally declared free when union troops marched into the City. On June 19th, 1865 Union General Gordon Granger arived at Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended. Over 250,000 Texan slaves and black people had no idea that the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued in 1863! The newly free men and women held public celebrations, and thus laid the base for this day.

While Holidays, statues, symbols and flags do matter, it definitely requires more than an increased recognition of Juneteenth to actively eradicate racism in all its forms from our country. If it is not followed with substantial change, the scramble to acknowledge today will only seem like hollow words of solidarity and civil rights movement be nothing but empy promises.

How are Texans Celebrating Juneteenth?

While Juneteenth has been an official state holiday in Texas since 1980 as well as a Federal holiday, many people are only just now beginning to learn about and celebrate it. - In recent years, Juneteenth celebrations have been popping up all over the state, with festivals, parades, rodeos, and other events commemorating the day.

This year, Juneteenth falls on a Sunday, which means many Texans will have the day off to celebrate, as well as the twentieth also being declared a public holiday.

Juneteenth is a time to remember and honor the struggles of those who came before us, as well as to celebrate our own progress as a state and a nation.

As we commemorate Juneteenth this year, let us also recommit ourselves to the work that remains to be done in order to truly achieve equality for all.

The whole idea of celebrating this day is to recognize, remember and reeducate ourselves about what has happened. The gruesome past, however old it may be, still has its tentacles embedded in some strata of our community. Sharing the joy, victory and tradition of Juneteenth is a way to spread love and respect for Black Americans.

Collard Greens and Sweet Potatoes

The barbeque is served with a side of these healthy options. Collard greens (how long do collard greens last?) and sweet potatoes (What wine goes well with sweet potatoes?) are rich in vitamin K and A. While sweet potato mash is my favorite go-to, you could also do a sweet potato pie If you plan to have family over.

Watermelon and Red Soda Water

The red color symbolizes the bloodshed during the slavery ages. You will find it plenty on Juneteenth. To beat the heat, chilled watermelon and iced- red soda water is just perfect. Although, I prefer making a hibiscus tea (how long does hibiscus tea last?) and serving it with lots of ice, you can also make a watermelon slushie to keep things healthy and exciting.
