The Hothouse: Bringing the Heat Towards Texan Agriculture

Thriving Farmer Podcast: Helping Farmers Succeed

Permaculture in Austin, Texas

One of the most enjoyable parts about my morning routine is sipping a nice cup of coffee and sitting down to listen to a thought-provoking podcast. It’s nice to find podcasts that are local to your area, and promote change in the community. For local Texans, Hothouse is a relatable podcast about design, ecology, and the way we garden now - based in Austin, Texas. Host Leah Churner sits down with experts and enthusiasts to talk about permaculture, the urban landscape, and how plants sometimes give us “the feels”.

Come Together, All You Plant People

A meeting of the minds for plant people and the horticulture-curious, Hothouse is a different kind of gardening show. With less focus on how-to garden, there is more of a focus on what, when, where and why. With 27 episodes so far, it’s easily a binge-worthy podcast to indulge into. Churner’s spinoff podcasts The Horticulurati was introduced in early 2020 where she co-hosts with friend and frequent guest speaker Colleen Dieter. Self proclaimed "designing women" fill you in on the ups and downs of landscaping life and teach each other about horticultural history and sundry fun plant facts. The quirky pair have a great sense of humor and several episodes made me laugh out loud. Can plants “hear” music? What would plant-generated music sound like? In one episode, Leah and Colleen attended  â€śThe Secret Song of Plants”. They also talk about deeper issues such as escapism and philosophy that we’ve learned through the pandemic.

Farm to Table Talk Podcast: Bringing Important Questions to the Table

A Podcast Worth Tuning in For...

Beyond the Hype: Farm-to-Table in Texas

For the majority of Hothouse episodes, topical news is not focused on as much as other important topics. We seem to get enough national news with the media options blatantly available, especially during these unprecedented times. So it’s refreshing to tune into a podcast that’s not talking about the news covered on so many other channels. But for big topics in the agriculture industry - such as the seeds being sent out from China, or new national policy changes - host Leah Churner does weigh in with her opinion.
