North Texas Giving Day

Discover > Truly Texan > North Texas Giving Day

North Texas Giving day is an online giving event. It lasts for 18 hours and it presents an effort to help local non-profitable charitable organizations. It also raises awareness about the existence of these organizations and encourages people to think what their communities need.

In northern Texas, this is very much about the local farmers markets, but other organizations are represented as well. Farmers markets play a big role in the local communities and they can be used to establish long term relationships with local food vendors.

Communities Foundation Of Texas

The event is founded and organized by the NGO called Communities Foundation of Texas. It was founded in 1953 and since then it has worked with more than 10.000 different organizations and provided almost 2 billion $ of assistance to them. What binds these organizations is that they are there to help their communities.

The charitable donations that are given through this organization are tax deductible. This means you’ll get a tax deduction at the end of the year. It’s the same as the amount you’ve donated and it will be deducted from your income tax.

Who’s Eligible?

The organizations that want to cooperate with the Foundation need to prove that they are eligible for such cooperation and there’s a list of rules that they need to follow in order to do so. First of they need to be registered as an organization to whom you can donate with the donations being tax deductible.  Those are known as 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(19) organizations.

The foundation doesn’t work with: private foundations, Chamber of Commerce, Cemeteries, Foreign organizations, and individuals. The organizations need to provide the proof that they are registered as a tax exempt NGO. This doesn’t mean that the Foundation endorses the views of each organization it works with.

Donations

There are 3 ways to give donations to the Foundation and it’s important that you select the right one for you right away. This is mostly about deciding do you want to stay anonymous when donating. There are a few ways to go in this regard and the decision doesn’t affect the donation itself just how your data is treated.

You could donate publicly where your name and address are made public, you could donate so that your information isn’t public but a foundation is aware of it or you could go completely anonymous and donate without anyone knowing who you are.

Recurring Donations

Another way to go is to register for a recurring donation. This means that you need to provide your credit card data and your donation will be taken out of it every year during the NTX giving day. This is on the third Thursday of September unless it’s a Jewish holiday.

It’s important that you do this with an active card, so don’t forget to change your information if you change your card or your bank within a year. The donations could be given once a month or 4 times within a given year.

Prizes

There are also prizes given out by the foundation that accompany the donations. The winners are chosen at random but the criteria depend on the decision made by the foundation and they are mostly symbolic. For instance there’s a reward of $1953 since that’s the year the foundation was started.

The biggest individual reward is set at $ 10.000 for those nonprofits working with the foundation for ten years or more. There are also matching donation when the foundation matches the donation given by the donors, which could end up being quite a lot.

The Farmers Markets

This event is especially important for Texas Farmers Markets. That’s because farmers markets can’t’ depend on the products they are selling exclusively or on deals with local vendors and farmers. Instead, they need funds for their own infrastructure as well as for the projects that they are involved in and that aren’t profitable.

That’s why markets sometimes need direct donations and the foundation allows you to provide them in an organized and a safe way. It also gives a large stage for small farmers and vendors that are involved with these markets.

Conclusion

North Texas Giving day is an event dedicated to providing charitable donations to worthy causes in North Texas. This includes local farmers markets if they are registered as tax exempt organizations as most of them are. It takes place on the 9th of September this year, but it’s set to start on the third Thursday of the month, annually.

The donations could also be given yearly if you choose to have an reoccurring donation. The foundation also gives out prices and matches the donation for the non-profits that are within the criteria set by it. Try to use this day to help the organizations you care about.
