Hop & Sting Brewing Co.

Formerly known as the Grapevine Brewery, friends Brian Burton and Jon Powell jumpstarted the brewery back in 2018 where they named their brewery after the tale concerning a frog and a scorpion. With the experience they gained, they produce high-quality, small-batch, craft ales, and lagers. Their Frigid Underworld Imperial Espresso Stout takes the two of my most favorite things into one fine can of ale. This 8.9% ABV hits you hard with its aromas of roasted malt and dark fruits. This brew makes for a medium body and moderate sweetness that is brought about by lactose and oats (how long do oats last?) to mellow out the roasted flavors of this coffee-spiked ale.

Live Oak Brewing Co.

Considered as one of the 10 Must-Try Craft Breweries in Austin, the Live Oak Brewing Co. is worth checking out. They use an old-world style of brewing that is rarely seen in the U.S. but widely practiced in Central Europe. Coupled with the traditional brewing style is the use of only the finest ingredients that will undergo a time-consuming mash and secondary lagering process. This labor of love by this world-renowned brewery gives drinkers a fine selection of brews based on classic lagers and ales from Central Europe. Their brew that embodies their knack for practicing traditional methods speaks especially true with their meringue-headed Hefeweizen Wheat Beer. Brewed with a measured amount of wheat malt and a few hops, the yeast strain that is featured with this beer harmonizes the flavors of vanilla, banana, and clove. Blew my mind when I first tried it. Even could have mistaken it for a Central European wheat beer if I knocked it back with a blindfold on.

Middleton Brewing Co.

Perfectly suited for the Texas Hill Country, Middleton Brewing focuses on hand-crafted, small-batch ales that are inspired by Belgian, American, and British brewing styles. The owners, Dennis and Kim Middleton, start brewing back in the summer of 2011 where they focused on perfecting their brews. This gave birth to their home-grown selection of seven Belgian-style beers, five American-style beers, and two British brews. What got to me is their soft complex Black Lab Porter – Robust Porter that has lingering notes of chocolate, toffee, and sweet nuts (how long do nuts last?). The taste profile of this porter highlights American and Continental malts the produce a slightly sweet finish.

Their roster of beers is the Alamo Golden Ale, Pilsner, German-Style Pale Ale, Amber Lager, and India Pale ale. My go-to is their Alamo Golden Ale which is their most versatile beer.
