Wine has been and always will have a special place in my heart during the holidays. It has brought me close with friends and families on the happiest holidays of my life. From toasting to good health or to just even for the mere sake of toasting, I have been an avid fan of this magical liquid that has been a toast of different ages.
Like a lot of other people, I started with store-bought wine and I even had the go-to big brands that I still drink to this day. Eventually, I started noticing wineries opening for the public across Texas and I got excited by this since this meant that drinking wine was now a whole experience. Fortunately, I travel around the Lone Star State because of my line of work, and, as a bonus, I get to check out uniquely Texan wineries.
Out of all the wineries that I had to check out, 5 have made a lasting impression on me as a weekend wine drinker. I saw how these wineries had huge potential when it came to the ambiance, educating visitors about the winemaking process, and, most importantly, awesome Texan wine! So here are my top 5 best picks for awesome weekend wine destinations in Texas.
Perissos Vineyard and Winery
One of the best vineyards and wineries in Texas is the Perissos Vineyard and Winery. Established by the Martin family back in 2003, this vineyard was developed from small-scale wine-making that operated out of their garage. After many seasons of experimental grape cultivation and wine-making, the Martins finally mastered winemaking and were ready to take the next big step. What started as 6 grapevines in the yard next to the Martin residence in Austin has exponentially grown into a vineyard that offers award-winning wines that are sought after all over the world. Currently, their 2017 Italian Stallion (Texas High Plains) is my go-to. It’s a perfect complement for grilled juicy meats because of the hints of black cherries (how long do cherries last?), boysenberry, baking spices, black pepper, and leather.

Duchman Family Winery
The first time I visited the Duchman Family Winery, I was awe-struck by the picturesque scenery of this family-owned winery that looked as if I was teleported to Tuscany. Founded in 2003, this winery was established by the Duchman family for their love of growing Italian grape varieties which are right at home with the weather patterns in Texas. They source their grapes from the Texas High Plains AVA where the temperature is cooler – making it ideal for the production of fine wines. Their 2016 Aglianico epitomizes the vision of the Duchman Family Winery. This Pinot-style blend has a structured tannin finish and gives hints of chocolate, black cherry, and vanilla to the nose. The 2016 Aglianico easily makes it to my list of top wines in Texas.

Embark on a scenic journey through Texas with our guide to the 7 most picturesque wineries, offering not just exquisite wines but breathtaking vistas that enhance your tasting experience.
Haak Vineyards and Winery
The Haak Vineyard and Winery prides itself as one of the first wineries to cultivate the Blanc du Bois. Coming from humble beginnings, this vineyard started as a hobby that has since exponentially grown from two grapevines. I have spent awesome afternoons in their winery because of the great scenery, music, and, of course, amazing wine. Their tours of the winery will hype you up because of their enthusiastic tour guide who is willing to educate visitors on the labor of love that goes into the Haak Vineyard and Winery’s winemaking process. My go-to white wine for this specific winery is their Blanc du Bois Estate Dry which is tart, balanced and has hints of tropical fruits. Perfect for easy-going get-togethers with light-drinking folks.
Awesome wine coupled with epic sceneries makes Haak Vineyards and Winery one of the jewels of Santa Fe, TX

Grape Creek Vineyards
Established in 1983 and acquired by Brian and Jennifer Heath since 2006, the Tuscany-styled Grape Creek Vineyard since then has become one of the most state-of-the-art wine-making facilities in Texas. This award-winning vineyard utilizes a blend of traditional and advanced winemaking principles. This produces a whopping 700,000 bottles of wine annually so there’s plenty to go around for everybody. Grape Creek Vineyards offers a wide array of sweet and dry wines that is sure to please the palate of any visitor. My personal favorite is the 2019 Merlot that is a blend of floral aromas with hints of oak, and vanilla. This is complemented by flavors of black cherry and raspberry.
With years of wine-making under their belt, the Grape Creek Vineyards offers visitors an epic taste and tour experience.

Kuhlman Cellars
Opened to the public in 2014, the Kuhlman Cellars offers visitors a truly premium wine experience. Chris and Jennifer Cobb started by managing a small estate vineyard situated in the Texas Hill Country AVA. Through their winemaker, they have adopted the Old-World principles of winemaking coupled with blending high-quality fruit that accents the strong characteristics of their catalog of sophisticated wines. This yields one of the most complex wines in Texas. When I got to visit the Kuhlman Cellars, I took a fast liking to the 2017 Barranca. This red wine is packed with baking spices and black currant to the nose and hints at ripe red berries and tannins in the mouth – perfect for grilled meats!
