7 Decidedly Decadent Texas Dessert Shops worth breaking those New Year’s Resolutions for

Part of moving forward into a New Year are those promises we whisper to ourselves in the form of New Year’s Resolutions. I, for one, am no stranger to this and I’m also pretty familiar with breaking resolutions time and time again. Right before doing this, of course, I get triggers but what especially tempts me to dessert relapse are Texan desserts. The strong tug to break my resolutions is especially true when trying to avoid these 7 decidedly decadent Texas dessert shops.

Out of all the peddlers of all things sweet in the Lone Star State, I have narrowed it down to the following shops. This is because whenever I visit cities and communities around Texas, I make it a point to sample their local pastries and breads. Eventually, I have my own go-to dessert shop haunts in Texas. For me, these dessert shops boast the big-Texan ideals of size, taste, and overall experience that’s truly worth breaking your New Year’s resolutions for.

Reverie Bakeshop

The Reverie Bakeshop offers exquisite pastries and desserts that are 100% vegan. The shop guarantees that all food items on their shelves are free from dairy, eggs, and any other animal byproducts. This makes for treats that are tastier and way healthier than the store-bought donuts (how long do donuts last?) that you’re used to. Entering their bakery, you’ll notice a wide array of delectable slices of bread and sweet pastries that will make you forget your New Year’s resolutions. When I dropped by, I couldn’t help but try their vegan chocolate mint brownies – packed full of flavor without the guilt.

Cookie Dust Bakery

Cookie Dust Bakery is pretty hard to miss when in Missouri City. Ever since I tried out this bakery, I’ve been so obsessed with their cookies that it keeps me up at night just thinking of them. Their cookies are textured as soft and chewie while at the center is where each cookie reaches its sustained crescendo with a generous serving of caramel. Try to resist the urge to buy a dozen, or you might find yourself snatching 1 or 2 as a midnight snack.

Desserts Only

Using the finest ingredients this family-owned Texan bakery can get hold of, the Desserts Only bakery serves up baked classics. What blows my mind is their famous Butter Cream Pound Cake that’s moist and fluffy. This, paired with an iced citrus drink in the afternoon, will make you have temporary Amnesia of your New Year’s Resolutions. Look out for their special Butter Cream Pound cakes (how long do cakes last?) that are available for the season. I’m sure they're extra special with all that syrupy goodness on top.

Their Irish bomb cupcakes, an assortment of cupcakes, mini pies, and brownies will surely force you to order. I highly recommend you try their peach cobbler, toffee cookies, and blueberry muffins. Village Baking Co. (Design District)

Established back in 2004, the Village Baking Co. is inspired by French neighborhood bakeries where there are pastries, freshly baked loaves of bread, baguettes, almond croissants (how long do croissants last?), and, my personal favorite, kouign-amann – a puff pastry-like layered sweet cake. The owners, Clint, and Kim Cooper were inspired by the old world style bread and this led them to put up the Village Baking Co. Their bakery sources the finest quality Texas wheat which means that each of their pastries and baked goodies is fresh, clean, and guaranteed to be best-tasting. If you ever get to visit, go for their chocolate-filled kouign-amann, and almond croissants.

La PanaderĂa (Alamo Heights)

With flavors hailing from South-of-the-Border, La Panadería was established by brothers José and David Càceres and infused their Mexican heritage with their baked pastries. Through their specialization in Long-cultured bread, the 48-hour fermentation process produces unique artisanal baked goodies. The first time I tried their pies was last Christmas and, to this day, I still crave their seasonal holiday pies like their pecan and pumpkin pies!

Lammes Candies at Hillside Center

You know you can’t go wrong with mixing chocolates, nuts (how long do nuts last?), and caramel, and what better place to get this sinful trifecta than at Lammes Candies at the Hillside Center. Established back in 1878, Lammes has now grown to offer a whopping 1,000 item offering of confections. Their best-seller and my personal favorite are their Texas Chewie Pecan Praline. This sinful dessert uses a 109-year-old secret family recipe that combines the texture of Texan Pecans (how long do pecans last?) coated with a generous amount of decadent caramel. This is so good that I planned a trip to Austin just to get a 3 lb. box with 45 pieces that I munched on with abandon.
