Honey & Co.: The Food Talks

Honey & Co.: The Food Talks is a wonderful podcast, started in 2017, is hosted by Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich, owners of Honey (how long does honey last?) & Co. and its sister restaurants (Honey & Spice, Honey & Smoke), a set of traditional Middle Eastern restaurants in London (think quince salads with mint, fresh curd cheeses, pitta breads, lamb shawarma, babkas, preserves, pickles, and freshly baked goods…I’m drooling).

The podcast is recorded in front of a small audience in their restaurant Honey & Spice, featuring guests from all over the world. The premise is simple: dishes are cooked, either from the guest’s own cookbook or on the suggestion of the guest, an interview is had, and then the food is served. The effect is a feeling of listening to a kind of performative dinner party that could be taking place in your living room (without the satisfaction of eating the food, however – when will they invent virtual taste?). You will be transported to different regions all over the world, hear fabulous stories of the food world from cooking schools to restaurants to bloggers-turned-professionals.

Sarit and Itamar invite all kinds of people related to the food world: writers, chefs, makers, waiters, drinkers, thinkers – as long as they have something interesting to say about food. Notable guests include Fabrizia Lanza of Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School fame (Sicily), Samin Nosrat (author of Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat), Nik Sharma (author of A Brown Table), and Joseph Trivelli of River Café.

A good episode to start with is Season 3 with the aforementioned Fabrizia Lanza. In this episode, she describes her world-famous cooking school, and why it’s so unique in what it offers. You’re whisked away to lemon-scented Sicily, where tomatoes reign and family history shapes the huge farm. An honest portrayal of the reality of working on a harsh island, shaped by wind, sea, and conflict – Fabrizia paints a rich story of the importance of the land, humble ingredients, and passing knowledge onto others. And you’ll want to start saving for a three-month stint at her school (it’ll set you back a hefty sum, so better start now!).
