Cantaloupes in Texas

Texas is renowned for its agricultural prowess, and cantaloupes are a notable part of the state's produce. With favorable weather conditions and fertile soil, Texas boasts a thriving cantaloupe industry, making it an ideal location to source fresh and juicy melons for your sorbet.

Cantaloupes are in season during the warm summer months in Texas, typically from May to September. The peak season is around June and July when the fruit is at its ripest and most flavorful. During this time, you'll find an abundance of cantaloupes at various farmers markets and local farms across the state.

Texas Farmer’s Markets with Fresh Seasonal Fruits

Texas is home to numerous farmers markets where you can purchase fresh cantaloupes to make your homemade sorbet. Here are a few notable farmers markets in Texas:

  1. Dallas Farmers Market (Dallas): Located in the heart of downtown Dallas, this vibrant market features a wide array of fresh produce, including locally grown cantaloupes.

  2. Pearl Farmers Market (San Antonio): Known for its emphasis on sustainable and organic products, Pearl Farmers Market offers a selection of high-quality cantaloupes during the summer season.

  3. Barton Creek Farmers Market (Austin): Situated in the beautiful Hill Country, this market showcases an assortment of seasonal fruits and vegetables, including delicious Texas cantaloupes.

  4. Houston Heights Market (Houston): This market in the historic Heights neighborhood of Houston provides an opportunity to explore various vendors offering fresh produce, including Texas-grown cantaloupes.

When selecting cantaloupes for your sorbet, look for ones that are firm but yield slightly to gentle pressure. A ripe cantaloupe will have a sweet aroma, a golden hue under the netted skin, and a weight that feels heavier than it looks. Choosing locally grown cantaloupes ensures the freshest and most flavorful fruit for your homemade sorbet.

Note: While the farmers markets mentioned are popular choices, it's always a good idea to check their operating hours and availability of cantaloupes before visiting. Additionally, local grocery stores and roadside stands in Texas may also carry fresh cantaloupes during the peak season.

How to Make Homemade Cantaloupe Sorbet

  1. To make homemade cantaloupe sorbet, start by cutting the cantaloupe into chunks, discarding the seeds and rind.

  2. Blend the cantaloupe chunks until smooth, and then add sugar or sweetener of your choice to taste. You can also add a splash of lemon or lime juice to enhance the flavor.

  3. Freeze the mixture in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions, or alternatively, transfer it to a shallow container and freeze, stirring every hour until it reaches the desired consistency.

By using fresh, locally sourced cantaloupes and adding your personal touch, you can create a tantalizing and refreshing homemade cantaloupe sorbet, perfectly suited for the Texas summer.

This cantaloupe sorbet recipe only requires 3 ingredients. Try adding some to champenge or sparkling wine for a sweet, zesty twist.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium honeydew melons, mine weighed around 1.5 pounds each
  • 1 cup simple sugar syrup
  • Juice & zest of 2 small lemons

Instructions

  1. Cut the melons into 1-inch cubes then transfer them to the freezer until they are almost frozen solid.
  2. Once frozen set up a blender or food processor, add the melon, syrup, and lemon, then puree for 3-4 minutes until smooth.
  3. Once blended transfer the slush to an airtight container. I just use a clean loaf pan covered with some cling film.
  4. Place the slush into the freezer and freeze it overnight for best results.
