6 Sustainable Farms in Elgin You Can Buy Organic Produce From

Aside from hotdogs, Elgin is also home to some of the most unique sustainable farming concepts in Texas! A combination of traditional and state-of-the-art Science-based practices, the following farms we listed below are maximizing their productivity while minimizing (or even eradicating) their negative environmental impacts.

SHAMBA

SHAMBA is an acronym for “sustainable homestead and microclimate based agriculture”. It also happens to mean homestead in Swahili, and it perfectly describes the scope of the farm — small and managed mostly by hand. SHAMBA was founded in 2016 by Sarah Graham, an educator, yoga teacher, herbalist, beekeeper, and gardening enthusiast.

The Vegetable Cart

The farm nests in a small 23-acre land with a colossal goal for the community. The Vegetable Cart produces products that are both human and environment-friendly. In their humble farm, they produce handmade natural soaps, raise hair sheep, and tend to their farm-to-market garden as harmoniously as possible with nature.

You’re also guaranteed by the fact that they only plant pesticide-free vegetables as well as raise hormone-free sheep and cattle. You’ll also love the soaps they make! They make a combination of rice (how long does rice last?) bran, coconut oil, and olive oil to ensure the soap is gentle, lathers perfectly, and not drying to the skin. Free-range eggs and baked goodies are also something to look forward to from the farm!

His farm, called Brachgrove Farm. is only 35 miles downtown Austin. His neighbor whose family has been planting shallots since the 1800s has asked him to take care of the few surviving shallot plants she had. In 2008, Kevin managed to grow a lot of the shallots in his healthy soil. Eventually, he sold them at the local Whole Foods! By 2009, he was already selling it directly to families. The farm also plants Oxblood lilies, onions, corns, and broccoli.

Friendly Pastures

The owners of Friendly Pasture founded the farm in 2011. Since then, they provided families with wonderful farm-fresh produce, grass-fed meat, or breeding stock! They raise pasture-raised broilers, field fresh eggs, red wattle pork, ducks, geese, and turkeys along with growing all sorts of produce in an aquaponic greenhouse. Staying true to their commitment, they started migrating to organic seed-based hydroponic fodder for the supplemental feed for all of their animals to provide them with what they are not able to find in the pasture.
