Discover > Business Spotlight > Ten Years Of Selling Fresh and Healthy Produce

This year marks ten years since the founding of the Denton Community Market. It’s one of the biggest and most well-known farmers market in Texas and in these ten years it has become an essential part of the community it is based in.

At this point, the market is more than just a place to sell fresh and healthy produce even though that is its main goal just as it was ten years ago.

Celebration

The market is celebrating its ten years with a variety of different programs and especially events that are made to look back at this ten years and to celebrate what the market has done in that time. It’s a bit difficult to say when the market was founded. The decision to make so was done at the end of 2009 but the first actual market took place in the following year, in spring when there were fresh produce.

The celebration will start this winter and they will last until the end of next year and be divided into different exhibits each month and each season. It’s a reason more to go and get your produce at the market.

A Look Back

The farmers market will organize a special exhibit booth in which you could look back at the history of the establishment and to experience these ten years that have gone by so fast. The booth will change its content every month in an effort to keep the visitors coming back.

There will also be a catalog that will showcase all the art and artisan work that was showcased at the farmers market during these ten years. The market also states that additional content is coming and that you should check your newsletter during these celebrations.

A New Director

At the same time, the anniversary will be celebrated with a new director on the helm of the market. This isn’t a part of the celebratory activities, but a previously agreed upon event since it was time for the new leadership according to the founding documents of the market and its ordinary practices.

Current director and co-founder Vicki Oppenheim is stepping down in January and for months before that the board is looking for someone to take her place. That person was found and now it’s announced that Chelsea Lewis will take on the role starting with January of 2020.

The Transition

There’s already and established process for this transition period. This is so that the market is able to operate as it has for the previous ten years without skipping a bit while the new leadership takes it places and learns how to deal with day to day tasks that it entails.

The new director will be in ED training up to January 8th and during that time the previous director will still perform her duties. Once the new director takes over the ex-director takes up a new role as a member of the Board.

What’s Denton Community Market?

Denton Community Market is a place for local farmers, artisans, and artists, to sell their products and produce directly to the customers. The market has a strict policy as to who can sell at the market and that’s chosen based on the quality of the produce and the eco-friendly practices that they use.

`This allows the farmers to showcase their work and to have a steady base of customers. At the same time, it means that the buyers can rest assured that their food is healthy and produced in a way that’s in accordance to their values.

Why It Matters?

It matters for any business to be up and running for ten years. It showcases that there’s an inherit need for that business and that there are customers and clients that are coming back to it after all that years and with all that other offers available  to them.

It’s also important for the community in Denton as a whole, because it’s a constant and something they can all rally on.  It means that local bands, local artists, and local farmers always have someone to rally and fall back on.

Conclusion

Denton Community Market celebrates ten years of existing at the end of this and at a start of the next year. The market was founded in the end of 2009 and it had its first sale in the spring of 2010. This will be celebrated by a variety of different events and there will be a nostalgia exhibit that will change each month starting at the end of 2019.

There’s also a change in leadership since the farm director is stepping down to a position of board member and new director starts in January 2020. The transition period won’t affect farmers or buyers.
