Watermelon in Texas

Watermelon is an important crop in Texas. According to Texas A&M, the Lone Star state is third in the production of watermelons in the US with a statewide economic impact exceeding $160 million, with 40% of counties and rural areas in Texas involved in the commercial production of watermelon with Hidalgo, Brooks, Know, Gaines, and Wood leading the production among Texas counties; while smaller watermelon gardens are found in east Texas

Watermelons, Texas' largest annual horticultural crop, are visible and sold everywhere - supermarkets, groceries, farmers markets, farm stands, and roadside markets.

Supply of watermelon in Texas hits its peak during the summer season because of the harvest schedule for watermelon - April in Lower Rio Grande Valley, June and July in the Winter Garden and East Texas, and a late summer/early fall harvest in southern High Plains and Cross Timbers/DeLeon.

Wow them with Watermelon

Watermelon is a very versatile fruit. Although it is very easy to prepare and simple to eat - just slice it and eat it! - there are a lot of creative ways to use watermelon in food and drinks.

But first, a pro tip: we are used to eating watermelon in the shape of a half-moon, right? Try this for a change: slice watermelon to make watermelon sticks instead. This will make eating easier and not as messy!

Drinks. It is great to eat if you need to hydrate - or make a watermelon slushie or margarita if you prefer a cold drink (pro tip: make your own watermelon ice to enrich the watermelon flavor of your drink). If you want to make sure everyone gets a drink, use watermelon to make a keg! A fan of margarita? Adding watermelon and jalapeno will definitely spice up your happy hour drink.

Light snacks. You can make a watermelon salad for light snacking (consider combining watermelon with sliced apples, arugula, nuts (how long do nuts last?), and cheese). Showcase your creativity by slicing watermelon into thin discs to make pizza, using blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries for toppings. Looking for a perfect summer finger food? Try combining watermelon and feta cheese. In the mood for tacos? Make your own watermelon salsa. It pairs best with grilled chicken filling. Upgrade your guacamole by adding watermelon and feta cheese. Ready to take it one step further? Fry some bacon (how long does bacon last?) and make bacon-wrapped watermelon. This will surely surprise your guests who will definitely try this at home too.

Dessert. If you love your baked goods, then make a cake or cupcake version using watermelons.

Frozen treats. Watermelon popsicles are a great dessert idea perfect for kids and adults. You have two options: freeze crushed watermelon using popsicle mold or cut a watermelon in the shape of a popsicle and insert a stick in it before freezing it. Or make watermelon jello, which can be a kids’ dessert or something that is for adults only if you put vodka in it (jello shots!).

These are just some ideas. If you want to have more excellent watermelon ideas, visit the Frisco Farmers Market Watermelon Weekend.
